One element, however, often flies under the radar: the humidity that accumulates inside the anesthesia machine itself. This detail, which may seem minor, can actually have significant consequences for the lifespan of your equipment and, ultimately, for the safety of your patients.

Where Does This Humidity Come From

Every breath a patient takes under anesthesia contains water vapor. With each procedure, this humidity settles into the breathing circuit, the CO2 absorber, and around the inspiratory and expiratory valves. Left without adequate ventilation, day after day, it never fully evaporates. Instead, it accumulates in the corners of the equipment.

A Simple Procedure, a Few Minutes a Day

1. Make sure the gas evacuation valve is open.
2. Remove the breathing bag, patient circuits, and the gas evacuation tube from the back of the machine.
3. Open the absorber and remove the soda lime canister to allow the humidity inside it to escape.
4. Wipe the bottom of the absorber base to eliminate any trace of residual water or moisture.
5. Remove both domes, wipe them with a dry cloth, then place them on a flat surface, opening facing up, to promote proper air circulation.
6. Remove the inspiratory and expiratory valves to leave all of the absorber’s internal circuits open and allow the humidity to fully escape.
7. Leave the machine this way overnight.
8. The next morning, reassemble the machine and perform a leak test before the first use of the day.

An MRI machine does not produce a uniform magnetic field throughout the room. Its strength is highest at the center and decreases with distance, much like the heat from a fire fades the farther you step away. Heart Rate

Depends on whether dexmedetomidine or another alpha-2 was used in the premedication (these drugs cause bradycardia). Significantly lower heart rates (as low as 35 bpm) can be seen, but are not necessarily a cause for concern if MAP is above 60mmHg.

Respiratory Rate

EtCO2

Hypercarbia occurs when EtCO2 > 55mmHg for all patients, should be between 40-55mmHg. In cases of head trauma or increased intracranial pressure, a lower EtCO2 is helpful in reducing ICP, aim for 30-35mmHg.

SPO2

Assuming the patient is intubated and breathing 100% oxygen, SpO₂ should always be 98 – 100%. Hypoxemia is considered present when SpO₂ falls below 95%.

Blood Pressure

Hypotension occurs when SAP falls below < 90mmHg or MAP falls below 60mmHg. Hypertension in dogs occurs when SAP is > 150mmHg, in cats > 160mmHg. If hypotension is noted:

1. Assess patient depth and turn down inhalant anesthetic
2. If HR is normal, consider fluid bolus
3. If bradycardia present, consider anticholinergic and/or reversal of any applicable drugs

Monthly maintenance​ (50 cycles)

For maintenance of the Steria Autoclave, always open the door, then shut the breaker power off at the back of the machine.

1. Clean the distilled water tank

Open the cover for the clean water tank and find at the very bottom a white strainer filter. Pull it up to remove it and make sure that it is clean. You can use a toothbrush to remove any hard debris stuck to it. Rinse it ou and then reinstall. Wipe the inside of the basin to remove any residue.

2. Clean the filter inside the chamber

Remove the rack inside the chamber. You can clean the rack with a damp rag. Found at the bottom of the chamber, near the rear, is a strainer filter. Unscrew the strainer filter and pull it out. Make sure that there’s no debris around the strainer. You can pull the strainer out to clean it with a toothbrush. Rinse it out and put it back together before reinstalling..

3. Clean the interior of the chamber

Use a damp rag to clean the interior of the chamber, removing any debris and dirt on the inside. You can also clean the front door gasket and the surface where the door gasket sits on the chamber.

3 Months Maintenance (200 cycles)

At the front of the machine, open the front cover which exposes the Hepa filter. This filter is to be replaced every three months or 200 cycles. To replace it, simply unscrew it and discard it, the you can screw the new one in place.
