The Rest of the Day After Treatment

• Your face might feel warm after treatment. Soothe your skin by placing ice packs (or bags of frozen veggies) on the treated area for 20-minute increments.
• Keep your head elevated on a pillow or two when lying down to prevent unnecessary swelling.
• You may notice a grid-like texture on your skin. This is completely normal; each of those microscopic dots represents an area of skin that was treated. (The criss-cross pattern marks the actual path of the laser beam as it moves over your skin.)
• Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. (Avoid caffeine and alcohol the rest of the day.)
• If your skin feels tight or itchy, apply a non-comedogenic moisturizer. (We recommend leaving your moisturizer and sunscreen in the refrigerator; it makes applications feel especially soothing.)
• Protect your skin from the sun after your appointment for the Fraxel laser in Philadelphia by wearing SPF 30 sunscreen, reapplying every 2 hours.

After Treatment: Days 2 to 7

• Wash your face with warm water. (Hot water will not damage your skin, but warm water feels much better.)

• Although cold compresses will no longer benefit your healing process after the first day, the coolness against your skin will still feel good. Apply cold compresses to your skin for as long as you like.
• If you are experiencing uncomfortable swelling, any over-the-counter anti-inflammatory (such as Aleve or Motrin) can be beneficial in reducing puffiness. The most common areas of swelling are under the eyes and around the mouth.
• You may notice tiny white bumps all over the skin. These are pockets of solidified oil that will shed within a day or two if left alone. (Do not pick these, as your skin is very sensitive right now.)
• You may experience peeling. If this occurs, do not pick or peel the flaky skin. The skin will shed off naturally as the healing progresses, and forced peeling can cause hyperpigmentation (dark spots) or hypopigmentation (light spots).
• Gentle shaving or tweezing is fine, but avoid waxing or applying hair removal cream on treated areas.

After Treatment: 2 Weeks

• You should be able to resume your original skincare regimen. However, if your regular products irritate your skin, abstain from using them for 1 to 2 more days.

Please remember the recovery process looks different for everyone; be patient with your skin as it heals.

But here’s the truth: a half syringe can work in very specific situations, but it’s not the best choice for most people. Our goal with this post is to explain why we don’t recommend half-syringes, break down exactly what a half-syringe entails, and help you understand the pros and cons so you can make an informed decision with your injector — ideally someone with experience and artistry, like our team of expert injectos at About Face Aesthetics.

The 0.5 mL Myth: What a “Half Syringe” Really Means

When people ask for a half-syringe, they usually mean 0.5 mL of dermal filler. To put that in perspective:

• 0.5 mL is roughly a tenth of a teaspoon.

• 0.5mL of dermal-filler is approximately the same size as a pea (in comparison to a full 1.0mL which would be equivalent to a blueberry)

A half-syringe is a very small amount of product. Although it’s enough for subtle hydration, maybe softening a line, or adding the tiniest lift to the Cupid’s bow — it’s not enough to make the kind of change most of our patients are truly looking for (natural-looking, but noticeably improved).

We often see clients come in thinking, “I’ll start with a half syringe and it will be perfect,” only to find that once the swelling has dissipated and they can see their final results, the outcome is more limited than they expected. That’s not a bad thing — it’s just important to know what a half-syringe of dermal-filler realistically can and can’t do before you book.

Why We Haven’t Historically Offered Half-Syringes

There’s a reason we haven’t historically offered half syringes at About Face Aesthetics: most of the dermal-fillers available in a half-syringe size aren’t ideal for lip enhancement.

There are currently 29 FDA-approved dermal fillers in the United States, each with unique properties, textures, and best-use cases. Some are better for cheek volumizing, others for fine lines and mimicing bone. and some are specifically intended for lip usage. Meanwhile the select few dermal-fillers that are avaialable in the half-size are the most generic versions of Juvederm and Restylane, intended for general touch-ups and not lips. Limiting your lip-options to only the few fillers available in a half-syringe often means you’re not getting the product that will best suit your anatomy, your aesthetic goals, or the longevity of your results.

Our expert injectors have a deep understanding of all these options and want the freedom to select the filler that will give you the most natural, flattering outcome — not just a convenient half-syringe size.

Meeting in the Middle: Our New Half-Syringe Option

That said, we recognize that many clients are curious about starting smaller. Sometimes the fear of looking overdone, the desire to test the waters, or even budget considerations make the idea of a half syringe appealing.

So, we’ve decided to offer a half-syringe option, with some important caveats:

• A half syringe isn’t the best option for most people who want noticeable enhancement.

• It works best for clients who already have nice lip volume / shape and want minimal tweaks or hydration-focused results.

• If you’re set on a half syringe even when it’s not ideal, we’ll have you sign an agreement acknowledging that it’s not the recommended approach. Transparency is key — we want you to leave happy and informed.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Half-Syringe Lips?

A half-syringe of lip filler can be appropriate for certain situations:

1. Hydration boost: If your lips are already full but feel a little dry or fine lines are starting to appear.

We are so lucky that we live in a time (and place) where dermal filler injections are an option. In roughly an hour, we can safely and effectively tweak our appearance to better meet our desired results; whether that’s overall rejuvenation, contouring, adding volume to lips, etc.

Due to this ability to customize our appearance in a safe and satisfactory way while immediately boosting our self-esteem, HA dermal-filler injections continue to grow drastically in popularity and demand. However, sometimes people choose to undergo lip filler dissolving in Philadelphia to undo their dermal-filler results and start fresh.

The plasticky, waxy, obviously “done” faces with overfilled lips and cheeks prevent a lot of people from moving forward with truly exploring the anti-aging and beauty options available to them. The catch-22 is that although it’s easy to pinpoint examples of ‘bad’ dermal-filler, we likely see ‘great’ examples all the time, but because the results look natural, it’s impossible to connect the pretty results with the maligned treatment.

We’ve Got Great News for Lip Filler Reversal

Even though the vast majority of people LOVE their HA dermal-filler results, if for whatever reason you HATE the way your results look, please rest assured that you have options to correct or erase the problematic area. The fact that these injections are not permanent usually helps provide peace of mind for first-timers who are nervous about what to expect.

Let’s pretend that you just got your lips injected to perfect your pout, and at first glance, it appears that your results end up more Kylie circa 2018 than Kris 2025.

What do you do?

When you’re immediately post-treatment with super-swollen lips, “patience” is the last word of advice you want to hear. But realistically, if it has been less than 48 hours since your injections and things look bigger than expected or asymmetrical, or feel bumpy, whatever, try your best to take deep breaths and NOT FREAK OUT.

Please remind yourself that swelling does not always occur evenly, and until all swelling dissipates, it is impossible for you to evaluate your results. To prevent the inaccurate placement of the dissolving solution, we want to make sure all swelling has dissipated so that the provider can truly and accurately assess the situation.)

We can sympathize first-hand: the first few days after lip-filler injections can be really annoying.

But, we promise: the swelling will be over before you know it, and your results will (likely) make you happy enough to mitigate any brief swelling. (If the swelling is super problematic for you, taking an OTC anti-inflammatory such as Aleve can help, and icing the treatment area may help provide some relief. Feel free to call us if you want more advanced recommendations to help reduce extreme lip-swelling.)

But before we buy into this and “cancel” one of the most valuable tools in modern aesthetic medicine, let’s take a step back and review this.

The Real Problem: Poorly Trained Providers, Not Poor Product

In reality, bad outcomes, big ducky lips, over-done cheeks, any “bad” work is not the fault of the dermal-filler. The dermal-filler can’t inject itself (yet). The core issue behind the plethora of distorted faces and unnatural outcomes is due to the increasing prevalence of unqualified providers.

The argument we frequently see online is inherently flawed:

1. Vitamin E, Ginger, Garlic, Cayenne Pepper, Bilberry, Fish Oil: These items all act as blood-thinners — prolonging bleeding and making bruising much more likely to occur.
2. Gingko Biloba: This supplement is thought to be great for improving memory, but is 300x more likely to prolong bleeding than Vitamin E! (see above)
3. Ginseng: This is one of the most popular medicinal herbs in the world, and is believed to increase vitality. That being said, it has also been associated with episodes of hypertension and rapid heartbeat.
4. St. John’s Wort: Taken by millions of people to treat anxiety and depression, this may also interrupt the effects of numbing agents and anesthetics used during your medical procedure.
5. Echinacea: This herb can have a negative impact on your liver when mixed with general anesthesia.
6. Ephedra, Ma Hung: Commonly found in weight-loss supplements, these ingredients should be avoided before surgery as they are reported to increase blood pressure, and potentially cause irregular heart rate, insomnia, seizures, heart attacks and strokes.
7. Aspirin: An over-the-counter pain-killer, this product has blood-thinning components that are great for heart health — but will also leave you much more likely to bruise.

Especially if you know what to expect, injections are a (relatively) easy way to acheive your aesthetic goals. BUT, your results are only partially under our control, YOU have more control over your outcome than you may realize. Please read on for our thorough list of what to do and NOT do to insure the best possible results from your dermal-filler treatments in Philadelphia.

About Face Skin Care has a combined 40+ years of injecting experience in our office. We’ve had all the trainings, used all the products, and have gone through more vials of botulism (Botox, Jeuveau, Dysport and Daxxify, amongst others over the years) and syringes of dermal-filler (Juvederms, Restylanes, RHA, Versa, Radiesse, and all the biostimulators) than we can count. After all the exposure and experience we have, we’ve decided to share it with you!

(Also, after repeating the following list countless times throughout the day, we finally had the epiphany to share this information with everyone on the internet. Feel free to bookmark this article, this list is a work in progress and changes as we learn more tips and tricks!)

Author’s Note: Please DO NOT be intimidated by the length of this list. We tried to be as inclusive and thorough as possible to prepare you for everything your procedure.

Here are the things you should do and avoid before botox, fillers, and any other injections you might decide to get. 

Do NOT do This Before Your Injection Treatment

• Do Not take blood-thinners for 2-days before your treatment. The most likely culprits are Aspirin, St. John’s wort, Fish Oil, Vitamin E, and alcoholic beverages. (These are all anti-coagulators and can increase the likelihood bleeding, and bruising.) 
• Do Not schedule your treatment within 4-weeks of any big event. Anytime your skin breaks, there is a chance of bruising or swelling, your body will need time to respond to the treatment, and may need a tweak. Please make sure to give yourself plenty of healing time before a big event JUST IN CASE.
• Do Not move forward with lip injections if you’ve had recent dental work. Please wait at least two weeks between lip injections and dental work to ensure that all wounds have had time to heal and there is no risk of spreading bacteria. (The human mouth is so dirty!)
• Do Not undergo any cosmetic injections if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. (There are no studies to confirm that this is safe for Baby.) 
• Try to not come to the appointment with any facial products applied. Some of the things you want to avoid before botox or other injections are makeup, moisturizer, and sunscreen. (But if you do, it’s not a huge problem, we’ll make sure your skin is properly cleansed and prepared before injecting!)

Do This Before Your Injection Treatment

• Do tell us if you have any history of cold sores or herpes break-outs. We can prescribe medication to minimize the chances and duration of a possible break-out.
• Do tell us about any important medical history; any autoimmune issues, food allergies, bleeding disorders, etc. The better we understand everything about YOU, the better we can treat you.
• Do feel free to bring a picture of your desired outcome. Our definition of “plumped,” “smoothed,” or “contoured” could vary drastically from yours. We want to make sure we are on the same page as you, and we can guide you as realistically as possible based on this.
• Do you have microbladed eyebrows? If so, please call your brow provider to see what they recommend for Botox injections with your eyebrow treatment.
• Do you know if you’re an easy bruiser? Please tell us when scheduling, and we can make suggestions for products to take beforehand to reduce the risk of bruising. 
• Do you enjoy pineapple? Eating fresh pineapple a week prior to your appointment can help reduce the likelihood of bruising. 
• Do try to eat a small snack before your appointment. Having food in your stomach during a dermal filler, Sculptra, Kybella, Botox, or Dysport injection will help prevent you from feeling light-headed or faintish.
• Do tell us if you’re squeamish or needle-phobic, we can do our best to help minimize your exposure to anything that might make you feel “ick”.

After Your Injection Treatment

Most of the time, people do not have any issues after their injection treatments. Side effects are rare, and satisfaction is high! But there are still a few important things you should do and avoid after fillers or any other injection treatment: 

Do NOT do this after your Injection Treatment! 

• Do not apply a lot of pressure to the treatment area for the rest of the day.when using a compress against your skin.
• Do not lie down for at least 4 hours after a Botox / Dysport treatment.
• Do Not: Engage in aerobic activities for 24 hours after injection treatments. Although extremely rare, you do not want any product to migrate from its injection site.
• Do Not: Sleep flat on your face (if you can help it) for 3-4 days after your treatment.
• Do Not: Touch or massage the facial area for about 6 hours after the procedure.
• Do Not: Wear glasses or hats that may press against a treatment site for 6 hours afterward.
• Do Not: Schedule a dental treatment until two weeks after your procedure.

DO this after your Injection Treatment! 

• If you’re worried about bruising, do use cold compresses (like bags of frozen veggies) to help reduce bruising and swelling.
• Do remember that patience is a virtue. The immediate results you see aren’t final. It can take 14-days for your neurotoxin to fully kick in, and sometimes even longer for dermal-filler to fully integrate and settle.
• Do avoid touching the treated area for the first six hours following treatment.
• Do limit the levels of heat your skin experiences within 24 hours of your injections. (This includes sun exposure and things like heat lamps, saunas or tanning beds.)
• Do make sure to stay hydrated and drink lots of water, as this will help everything work to its full capacity.
• Do add an extra pillow under your head before going to bed (after dermal-filler treatments). The added elevation can help prevent swelling.
• Do remember to ask about follow-up appointments!
• Remember that there’s no need to rush results! We prefer a slow, building process with your injection results (when it comes to adding volume) to make sure that your results are as flattering and beneficial as possible. 
• Do contact us immediately if you’re experiencing any surprising side effects after your injection appointment; fevers or chills, discolorations around areas or areas warm to the touch, and severe pains are all issues that require immediate attention.

Whether you treated your face or your body, the Sculptra after-care instructions are the same. To insure the best possible results, please follow these after-care tips:

5-5-5 Rule
Massage the treated-areas for 5-minutes, 5-times a day, for 5-days after treatment. This “massage” should consist of mid-pressure rubbing all along the injection sites. These areas might be sore immediately following the treatment, but it is still important to massage the areas anyway. Try to use “slippy” skincare product while administering your massage (our preference is always Alastin Regenerating Skin Nectar) so that your fingers can glide easily over the skin.

No Makeup for 24+ Hours
Please avoid applying makeup for at least 24-hours post-Sculptra, you want to make sure that the injection sites have had enough time to heal before exposing them to any potential germs or bacteria that may be in/on your cosmetics.

Sun Exposure
