Have you ever thought about what a sex therapist does? These are licensed mental health professionals trained to help clients with their sexual concerns through sex therapy sessions, a form of talk therapy for individuals and couples dealing with sex-related issues.

Think of the balance between body and mind like a seesaw. On one side is physical health, which includes factors such as hormonal balance and good blood circulation. On the other side is emotional closeness and good communication. Sexologist Dr Vineet Malhotra at VNA Hospital says many couples become unsure if they should see a doctor or a therapist about their concerns. However, it is important to distinguish between medical conditions and emotional issues to identify appropriate treatment.

When to seek medical advice?

Your body has a powerful way of showing when something is wrong. If you notice any of these symptoms, pay attention as they are warning signs of sexual health issues:

Pain, discomfort, or burning sensations during sex or urination.

Unusual discharge, swelling, or other signs of infection.

Painful intercourse, pelvic discomfort, or unexpected bleeding.

Sudden shifts in your libido, erectile function, or menstrual cycle.

Symptoms suggestive of sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

If you have these medical concerns, you need to see a healthcare provider right away. Dr Malhotra stresses that “waiting too long can make problems worse, especially infections or hormone issues. It is crucial to consult a physician first.

What are intimacy issues?

Not all sexual health issues come from physical problems. “Often, emotional and psychological factors play a big role in intimacy issues,” says the sexologist. Therapy might be a better choice in these cases:

You lack sexual interest but have no underlying medical conditions.

You realise there’s an emotional disconnect with your partner.

Body image concerns, performance anxiety, or unresolved trauma trigger stress during intimate moments.

Conversations about sex feel strained or lead to conflict.

Emotional exhaustion or stress consistently interferes with intimacy.

Therapy can help you feel safe while you explore your feelings and experiences. A trained therapist will help you understand emotional patterns, improve communication, and build a deeper connection with your partner. Dr Malhotra emphasizes “the need for an environment free of fear and self-criticism to allow for authentic connection.”

How does sexual health affect emotional health?

Many sexual health issues come from a mix of physical and emotional factors. Here are some situations to think about:

Painful sex may lead to performance anxiety, creating a vicious cycle of avoidance.

Erectile dysfunction can exacerbate feelings of inadequacy and anxiety in relationships.

Hormonal fluctuations might elevate emotional distress levels, impacting intimacy.

STIs can damage self-esteem, making it harder to engage in intimate acts, while strained relationships can intensify physical discomfort.

For couples facing both issues, using a two-part approach is often best. By taking care of both emotional and physical needs, you can create a better path towards recovery and improvement in your sexual health. Dr Malhotra says, “Sexual health is about more than just physical ability. It is also involves comfort, emotional connection, and open communication.”

Vaginal dryness is a common yet often overlooked issue that many women face at different stages of life. It can lead to discomfort, itching, irritation, and even pain during intimacy, affecting both physical and emotional well-being. Despite how common it is, the topic is still surrounded by silence and stigma, leaving many unsure of why it happens or how to manage it. The truth is, vaginal dryness can be caused by a range of factors, including hormonal changes, medications, stress, lifestyle habits, and even dehydration. However, it is manageable. From minor dietary changes to healthier lifestyle choices and simple self-care tips, learning how to increase vaginal lubrication is simple.

For World Sexual Health Day, Health Shots spoke to Dr Chetna Jain, an infertility expert and gynecologist, to understand what causes vaginal dryness and how to increase vaginal lubrication naturally.

What causes vaginal dryness?

Vaginal dryness is more common than you might think, and it can happen at any stage of life. It is important to know that it is not a sign of something being wrong with you, it is simply your body reacting to internal or external changes. Here are some of the key causes:

1. Hormonal changes

One of the most common reasons is a drop in estrogen levels. This typically happens during menopause, after childbirth, while breastfeeding, or even during perimenopause. “When estrogen dips, the vaginal tissues may become thinner and produce less lubrication,” says Dr Jain.

Hormonal imbalance can lead to vaginal dryness. Image courtesy: Adobe Stock

2. Medications

Some medications can cause dryness as a side effect. These include antidepressants, antihistamines, and certain types of birth control. If you have noticed changes after starting a new medication, this could be the reason.

3. Stress and anxiety

Your emotional state has a big impact on your body. Stress and anxiety can affect the brain’s arousal signals, which in turn reduces your natural lubrication response.

4. Lifestyle factors

Everyday habits also play a role. Smoking, dehydration, and excessive alcohol intake can all contribute to vaginal dryness. Even things like not drinking enough water throughout the day can make a difference.

5. Underlying medical conditions

Health issues such as diabetes, autoimmune disorders, or infections can interfere with vaginal moisture and overall vaginal health.

How to increase vaginal lubrication naturally?

Vaginal dryness can be managed and improved with the right approach. Here are 3 effective ways to learn how to increase vaginal lubrication:

1. Make simple dietary shifts

Food has a strong influence on our health, and vaginal health is no exception. Make sure your diet contains these foods:

Omega-3-rich foods: Flaxseeds, walnuts, and fatty fish help improve blood circulation, which supports healthy vaginal tissues.

Vitamin E sources: Almonds, sunflower seeds, and spinach are packed with vitamin E, which helps keep mucous membranes (like the vaginal lining) hydrated. In fact, a 2023 study published in the African Journal of Urology found that vitamin E vaginal cream significantly improved symptoms of vaginal atrophy in postmenopausal women.

Soy products: Foods like tofu, soy milk, and edamame contain phytoestrogens, plant-based compounds that mimic estrogen in the body, helping to support natural lubrication.

Hydrating fruits and vegetables: Watermelon, oranges, cucumber, and other juicy fruits help keep the entire body, including vaginal tissues, hydrated.

2. Adopt healthy lifestyle habits

Your everyday habits influence everything from hormones to vaginal health. Here’s how to improve your lifestyle to increase vaginal lubrication:

Drink more water: It sounds basic, but staying well-hydrated is one of the easiest ways to support your body’s natural lubrication. Carry a bottle with you and sip throughout the day.

Manage stress: Regular yoga, meditation, or even simple breathing exercises can help calm the nervous system and improve your body’s response to arousal signals.

Quit smoking: Smoking restricts blood flow and damages blood vessels, which negatively impacts the health of vaginal tissues.

Exercise regularly: “Even light movement, such as walking or stretching, helps boost blood circulation and support hormonal balance, playing a key role in how to increase vaginal lubrication,” suggests Dr Jain.

Avoid harsh products: Steer clear of scented soaps, douches, and perfumed hygiene products, which can dry out the delicate skin in the vaginal area.

3. Other tips

When vaginal dryness is already an issue, these small steps can provide comfort and relief:

Natural lubricants: Using aloe vera gel or coconut oil (provided you are not allergic) are gentle, natural options for temporary relief.

Vaginal moisturizers: Over-the-counter moisturizers made specifically for vaginal dryness can be used regularly, not just during sex, to help maintain moisture.

Consult a doctor: If the dryness is persistent or linked to menopause, talk to a gynecologist. Options like estrogen creams or hormone replacement therapy may be recommended, depending on your needs.

These tips on how to increase vaginal lubrication can help you get rid of dryness down there!

World Sexual Health Day is marked as an effort to promote awareness around safe sex practices. Did you know changing weather patterns, particularly the monsoon season, can impact our sexual health? While the rainy season bring a refreshing change, they can also create conditions that increase the risk of intimate health infections. Poor hygiene, increased humidity, and damp clothing can heighten the risks of vaginal infections, discomfort, and reduced libido. Fortunately, with mindful care, couples can continue to enjoy the romance of the rainy season while safeguarding their sexual health during monsoon.

How to take care of sexual health during monsoon?

Here are seven important tips to maintain your sexual health during this monsoon season:

1. Make personal hygiene a priority

Good hygiene is the cornerstone of sexual health and becomes even more critical during the monsoon season. The moist and humid conditions can encourage the growth of bacteria and fungi, particularly in intimate areas, as per the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.

Here are some hygiene tips:

Wash frequently: Engage in frequent washing of your intimate areas with warm water and a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser, especially after sexual activity.

Avoid harsh products: “Steer clear of harsh soaps or douching, as they may disrupt your natural vaginal microbiome,” Dr Chirag Bhandari, andrology expert, tells Health Shots.

Men’s hygiene matters: For men, it’s equally important to keep the groin area clean to prevent infections.

2. Choose lightweight, breathable clothing that dries quickly

The risk of fungal infections increases with prolonged dampness. To protect yourself, consider the following:

Choose cotton: Opt for loose-fitting, cotton underwear that promotes airflow and minimises moisture buildup.

Change quickly: “Avoid remaining in damp clothing after workouts or rain to reduce the risk of skin irritation and infections,” suggests the andrologist.

Say no to tight fabrics: Tight or synthetic clothing can trap moisture, contributing to conditions like candidiasis (yeast infections).

3. Engage in safe sexual practices

The rainy season can create a cosy atmosphere, but it is important to remain vigilant about safety during intimate moments.:

Use condoms: Always use condoms to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) as per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Listen to your body: If discomfort, unusual discharge, or itching arises, stop sexual activity and consult a doctor.

Ensure comfort: “Both partners should feel safe and at ease with any sexual activities they engage in, especially in high-risk seasons,” advises Dr Bhandari.

4. Stay hydrated

Hydration plays a crucial role in promoting sexual health and comfort. Here’s how:

Drink plenty of water: “Adequate hydration helps maintain pH levels and expel toxins from the body,” recommends Dr Bhandari.

Combat dehydration: Dehydration can lead to dryness and irritation during intimacy, making it essential to stay hydrated, as noted in the EPMA journal.

Include hydrating foods: Incorporate water-rich fruits, such as watermelon and cucumber, into your diet, along with herbal teas for added benefits.

5. Consume a balanced diet

Your dietary choices significantly influence your sexual and overall health. To enhance your nutrition:

Focus on nutrient-rich foods: “Emphasise foods that support hormonal balance and immune function,” urges the expert.

Incorporate probiotics: Foods such as yoghurt can promote healthy vaginal flora, while bananas and dark chocolate can boost libido.

Avoid processed foods: Stay away from highly processed or sugary foods, which can promote harmful bacteria and fungi.

6. Enhance your mood

The grey skies of the monsoon season can influence mood, energy levels, and libido. To combat these effects:

Stay active: “Regular exercise can enhance mood and energy levels, fostering intimacy,” guides the sexual health expert.

Spend quality time: Engage in activities that promote emotional connection with your partner, strengthening your relationship.

Seek sunlight: When possible, exposure to natural sunlight can help boost vitamin D levels, improving your mood and overall well-being.

7. Pay attention to warning signs and consult a doctor

If you notice any unusual symptoms, it is important not to self-medicate or delay seeking help:

Watch for symptoms: “Persistent itching, discomfort, unusual discharge, or pain during urination or sexual activity should not be ignored”, says the doctor.

Seek prompt medical attention: Early consultation can lead to a quicker recovery and prevent complications from conditions such as urinary tract infections (UTIs), bacterial vaginosis, or yeast infections.

If you are sexually active, you should be aware of the various sexually transmitted infections. The spotlight is usually on syphilis, gonorrhoea and chlamydia. That’s probably because they are more common across the globe. However, you should also be aware of chancroid, which is a rare, but painful sexually transmitted infection. This infection can lead to ulcers down there, and can increase the risk for Human immunodeficiency virus or HIV transmission. The good news is that there are antibiotics that can help to treat it.

What is chancroid?

It is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Haemophilus ducreyi, which infects the skin and mucous membranes of the private parts. “It leads to painful genital ulcers and swollen lymph nodes in the groin,” says obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Chetna Jain. Chancroid is rarely seen in America, but there may be cases in some areas of Africa, the Caribbean and Asia, as per research published in the International Journal Of Dermatology in 2007.

Know everything about this sexually transmitted infection. Image courtesy: Adobe Stock

“It can spread by having unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex with an infected person. The bacteria can also enter a person through small cuts or abrasions in the skin,” says the expert. Poor genital hygiene can increase the risk, and sharing contaminated towels, underwear, or sex toys may spread the bacteria. It can also increase the chances of developing HIV infection by 50- to 300-fold per each unprotected encounter of vaginal sex, as per research published in StatPearls in 2023.

What are the symptoms of chancroid?

The symptoms of chancroid usually appear 3 to 10 days after the infection, and include:

Soft, open sores with irregular edges and a greyish-yellow base on the genitals.

The ulcers bleed easily and may also release pus.

Groin lymph nodes become enlarged, tender, and may form pus-filled lumps.

The skin over swollen nodes can turn red and warm, sometimes leading to rupture and pus drainage.

Burning sensation or pain during sexual activity or urination, especially if the ulcers are near the urethra or vagina.

How is chancroid diagnosed?

Chancroid is diagnosed based on clinical examination and a few tests to confirm the presence of Haemophilus ducreyi.

During physical examination, the doctor will check for painful genital ulcers with irregular edges and a soft base.

A swab from the ulcer will be cultured to check for Haemophilus ducreyi.

A smear of ulcer pus will be examined under a microscope.

“Since chancroid symptoms are similar to other STIs like syphilis, which can lead to painless sores and a rash down there, doctors may tell you take the syphilis test,” says Dr Jain. A ample of blood or a swab of fluid may be taken from one of the sores to check if you have syphilis or chancroid.

How to treat chancroid?

The bacterial sexually transmitted infection can be treated in the following ways:

1. Antibiotics

It can be treated effectively with antibiotics that kill Haemophilus ducreyi. According to the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, the following antibiotics can help:

Azithromycin (1 gram orally as a single dose)

Ceftriaxone (250 mg intramuscular injection as a single dose)

Erythromycin (500 mg orally, three times a day for seven days)

Ciprofloxacin (500 mg orally, twice a day for three days)

Note: No medication should be taken without the consultation of a doctor.

“Resistance to antibiotics is uncommon but can occur, especially in people with weakened immune systems like people who are HIV-positive,” says Dr Jain. In most cases, the antibiotics can reduce the symptoms and speed up ulcer healing.

2. Treatment for swollen lymph nodes

If the lymph nodes are swollen and filled with pus, a doctor may drain them with the help of a needle or go for a small incision. “This prevents the formation of abscess or buildup of a pus), and speeds up healing,” says the expert.

Use mild soap and water down there.
3. Care at home

Apart from medical treatment, keep the ulcers clean by washing with mild soap and water every single day. “Avoid sex until you full recovery so that you don’t spread the infection. Also, maintain a healthy diet to support healing,” says the expert. Go for protein-rich foods like eggs, chicken and lentils to help with tissue repair. “Also, avoid smoking and alcohol, which are bad habits that can slow down healing,” says the expert. Make sure to get adequate sleep and proper hydration, as these can help to promote faster recovery.

“With treatment, you will notice the ulcers healing within 3-7 days and fully resolve in 2 weeks,” says the expert. Swollen lymph nodes may take longer time to heal, especially if they needed drainage.

You should regularly go for STI check-ups, especially if your are sexually active and have multiple partners. “Also, any of your recent sexual partners should be tested and treated for this infection, even if they don’t show symptoms,” suggests the expert.

Chancroid is a rare sexually transmitted infection that can be treated with proper antibiotic therapy and care. If left untreated, it can lead to painful sex, and increase the risk for HIV transmission.

Being distracted or losing focus is one of the symptoms of Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder or ADHD. So, if you have this disorder, your mind may wander off while having sex or sharing intimate moments with your partner. This may affect your sex life in a negative way. Turns out, even having the ADHD medication, Adderall, may have an impact on your libido. It is true that there is more evidence of men experiencing erectile dysfunction and changes in their libido and performance in bed. Still, women may also experience the sexual side effects of this medication. Read on to know the connection between Adderall and sex drive.

What is Adderall?

Before exploring the link between Adderall and sex drive, know what it is and what’s it used for. It is the trade name for a prescription medication containing a combination of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine. It is a central nervous system stimulant, a dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor and releaser, which means it increases neurotransmitter levels. “It increases the actions of neurotransmitters and hormones — norepinephrine and dopamine in certain areas of the brain, which may improve attention, concentration, wakefulness, reduce hyperactivity and improve fatigue, sleepiness and depression,” explains psychiatrist Dr Aparna Ramakrishnan.

Adderall helps manage the symptoms of ADHD. Image courtesy: Freepik

It is primarily used for the treatment of ADHD and Narcolepsy. While ADHD is a disorder that leads to symptoms like fidgeting and difficulty paying attention, narcolepsy is a condition where the brain finds it difficult to control its ability to sleep or stay awake. Adderall is often used to treat ADHD and narcolepsy, as both are associated with a dysfunction of these neurotransmitters in the brain, according to research published in StatPearls.

Adderall and sex drive: How does it affect libido?

Here’s the connection between Adderall and sex drive in women:

1. May increase sex drive

“In some women, Adderall may boost libido, especially if ADHD symptoms were previously interfering with sexual interest or satisfaction,” says obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Meenakshi Banerjee. Amphetamine, part of the medication, may enhance sexual experience, as per research published in the Nordic Studies On Alcohol And Drugs.

“Women with ADHD often experience distraction that affects their sex life. By improving attention and reducing anxiety, the medication may make it easier to be present during sexual activity,” says Dr Banerjee.

Also, dopamine plays a central role in the brain’s reward system, and that includes sexual pleasure. “Another connection between Adderall and sex drive is that the medication boosts dopamine levels. So, it may increase sexual desire or responsiveness in some women,” says the expert.

Also, for some women, the positive association between Adderall and sex drive may be because the prescribed drug reduces emotional overwhelm and enhances energy. This may indirectly lift libido and promote a more positive body image.

2. May decrease sex drive

However, the opposite is also true, as a study, published by the US National Library Of Medicine showed that women may experience decreased libido with Adderall. “For narcolepsy, 5 to 60 mg of the medicine per day is taken in divided doses. For ADHD, it begins with 5 mg once or twice a day (immediate release tablet). Gradually, the dose can increase up to a maximum of 40 mg per day,” says Dr Ramakrishnan. As for the extended release tablet for ADHD, it starts with 10 mg per day, and can gradually increase up to a maximum 30 mg per day. Higher doses or chronic use can affect the levels of hormones like cortisol and prolactin. “This can lead to a decrease in libido and menstrual cycle changes,” says Dr Ramakrishnan.

Dome women may experience a numbing of emotions while on the medication, which may reduce interest in sex. Stimulants can boost energy initially, but they may also lead to crashes or irritability later in the day—both of which can impact libido,” says Dr Banerjee.

ADHD medication may affect your sex life. Image courtesy: Adobe Stock

3. Impact on orgasm and sexual function

There can be a negative connection between Adderall and sex drive because the medicine may reduce blood flow to private parts, which can make arousal, lubrication, and orgasm more difficult. “While some women find it harder to reach orgasm, others can experience discomfort during sex due to dryness or tension,” says Dr Banerjee.

Adderall and sex drive: What can be done?

The connection between Adderall and sex drive can be both positive and negative. If it is affecting your libido, do the following:

Talk to your doctor: Never adjust the dose or stop taking the medication without consulting a doctor first. A change in dosage, timing, or switching to another ADHD treatment may help.

Monitor timing: Some women experience fewer side effects if they adjust when they take the medication.

Stay hydrated and consider vaginal moisturisers if dryness is an issue.
Explore therapy or couples counselling if sexual changes affect relationships.

Adderall and sex drive may be linked. While it can enhance libido and focus for some, it may reduce desire or sexual satisfaction for others. Consulting a doctor is key to finding the right balance for both mental and sexual health.

Creatine is very popular among athletes and fitness enthusiasts, as the supplement can improve muscle mass, performance and recovery. There is also an indirect connection between creatine and sex. While it doesn’t directly boost arousal, it can support energy, stamina, muscle performance, and recovery — all of which influence performance in the bedroom. There’s also interest in the likelihood that creatine may have a mild impact on testosterone levels, influencing libido and overall vitality. However, there’s limited direct scientific evidence linking creatine to improvements in sexual function, especially for women. As with any supplement, its effects can vary from person to person, and it is important to consult a healthcare provider before starting it, especially if sexual health is a concern.

What is creatine?

It is a chemical formed from reactions involving arginine, methionine and glycinethe (amino acids) in the liver and kidneys. It is found naturally in the body, but it can also be consumed from meat. There is also a dietary supplement that is used by many fitness enthusiasts to improve their exercise performance and increase muscle mass. The muscle mass gains seem to be due to the improved ability to do high-intensity exercises, as per research published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition.

Creatine can increase muscle mass. Image courtesy: Freepik

It may also be beneficial for people living with diabetes. During a 12-week study, published in Amino Acids, participants who had creatine and exercised showed better blood sugar control than those who only worked out.

Creatine and sex drive in women

Having this supplement may benefit people who want to focus on improved muscle mass or diabetes management. But can you take creatine to boost your sex life? The connection between creatine and sex drive in women isn’t direct, but there are some interesting links worth exploring. “Creatine, which helps produce energy in muscle and brain cells, is commonly used as a supplement to improve exercise performance and brain function. These areas do overlap with sexual health and libido,” says gynaecologist and infertility expert Dr Gurpreet Batra.

Here’s how creatine and sex drive in women may be connected:

1. Improved energy levels

Low energy and chronic fatigue are common causes of low libido, especially in women who balance work and responsibilities at home, and hormonal shifts during perimenopause or postpartum. “Creatine helps replenish ATP or adenosine triphosphate (the body’s energy currency), boost physical stamina and reduce feelings of exhaustion,” says the expert. These benefits can make women feel more awake, motivated, and physically ready, including for sex.

2. Better mood

Mental health plays a huge role in a woman’s libido. Creatine has mood-stabilising effects, and so, it may offer relief from symptoms of depression and fatigue, as per research published in the Journal Of Education Health And Sport. If you are in a better mood, it may naturally boost emotional readiness for intimacy.

3. Increased strength

When it comes to creatine and sex performance, regular use of the supplement, especially alongside strength training, can lead to better muscle tone, increased strength and improved body image. “For many women, feeling stronger and more confident physically leads to greater sexual confidence and desire,” says Dr Batra.

Can taking creatine before and after sex help with recovery?

Yes, taking creatine can help with recovery before and after sex, especially for women who experience fatigue, muscle soreness, or low stamina from physical activity, including sex. “Though creatine is usually associated with athletic recovery, the physical exertion during sex can similarly benefit from enhanced muscle energy and faster recovery,” says the expert.

Creatine and sex: Before getting intimate

Having creatine before sex gives a mild energy boost, especially if taken regularly.

Helps delay physical fatigue during intimacy.

Supports better muscle endurance, which is helpful for maintaining different sex positions.

“However, creatine doesn’t work instantly, so you need to build it up over time in your system,” says the expert.

Creatine and sex: After getting intimate

Reduces post-sex fatigue by replenishing ATP.

Speeds up muscle recovery, especially if sex was physically intense or involved long durations.

Minimises soreness in muscles, hips, thighs, or core areas.

“You can have 3 to 5 grams of the supplement per day either before sex or after. Take it with a carbohydrate-rich snack or shake for better absorption,” says Dr Batra.

Creatine and sex drive: What are the side effects?

Creatine, like any other supplement, should be taken under supervision. Its side effects may include the following:

The supplement draws water into your muscles, which may cause temporary water weight gain or a feeling of puffiness. This side effect of creatine might make some women feel uncomfortable or bloated, which can impact body confidence during sex.

Some women may have stomach cramps, nausea, gas or diarrhea, especially after taking too much at once.

The supplement pulls water into muscles, so without enough fluids, some might feel slight cramping in thighs or calves even during or after sex.

High-dose, especially over 10 grams in a day can stress the kidneys, especially if you are dehydrated, and have kidney issues.

Creatine is very popular among athletes and fitness enthusiasts, as the supplement can improve muscle mass, performance and recovery.

American actor Josh Duhamel, 52, has made no bones about revealing that he began testosterone replacement therapy to stay “virile” for his 31-year-old wife Audra Mari. The ‘Transformers’ actor admits his decision was driven by medical results showcasing low testosterone levels, and has had a positive effect on his energy levels in general. However, doctors warn that this treatment is not for all and sundry – and definitely not for general fitness or anti-ageing purposes.

According to people.com, Duhamel said his wife was one of the factors responsible to begin hormone replacement therapy. “It’s important for her that I stay as young and virile for as long as I can,” the actor said of his wife, whom he married in 2022.

Josh Duhamel on benefits of testosterone replacement therapy

His intimate life apart, the testosterone replacement therapy has impacted other aspects of his life in a positive way. Duhamel elaborates: “I think that there is an overall wellness, you know, just for just for those purposes alone… Just having that energy, that desire to go out and achieve, be a better dad, be a better brother, be a better friend, be a better business owner, you don’t taper off like you would normally—and I think that that’s also one of the benefits of it, mentally and physically.”

Josh Duhamel is a father of two. He has an 11-year-old son named Axl with ex-wife Fergie, and son Shepherd, 1, with Mari.

Josh Duhamel with his wife Audri, and their 1-year-old son.
Talking of what really urged him to consider the testosterone replacement therapy, he says, “I’d been hearing about this for a while, and it was one of those things that I didn’t want to talk about, neither did anybody I was asking about it. And I think that it was just, I took an inventory, a personal inventory, of how I was feeling, and I knew that I wasn’t quite where I was at five, 10, years before. That’s when I got myself tested, and realized my levels were low, and that’s when I decided to start doing it.”

He claims his physical strength seems to have improved – and changed his world. “I literally got my mojo back. And now it’s become, not so much about the aesthetics of it, as much as it is being around for my kids and being able to roll around the dirt with them like I could have when I was younger,” he said.

What is Testosterone Replacement Therapy?

Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) is a medical treatment used for men who have very low testosterone levels due to health conditions.

“It can help improve energy, sex drive, mood, and muscle strength. But it is important to understand that TRT is not meant for general fitness or anti-ageing purposes in healthy individuals. If used without proper diagnosis and monitoring, it can cause serious side effects,” warns Dr Srinivas Kandula, Senior Endocrinologist, CARE Hospitals.

What are the side effects of TRT?

According to Dr Kandula, TRT can lower sperm count, leading to infertility. It may also increase red blood cell levels abnormally, which raises the risk of blood clots. In men who are already at high risk of prostate cancer, TRT can potentially speed up cancer growth. “That is why it is very important to undergo blood tests and prostate screening before starting this treatment,” he adds.

Dr Aninda Sidhana, a sexual medicine consultant, says improved energy levels through Testosterone Replacement Therapy can be just a placebo effect.

“Sexual performance and vitality does not solely depend on the testosterone levels at all. There are multiple chemicals playing a role even in erectile dysfunction or poor sexual performance. Lifestyle Factors are much more crucial.
Endorsement of TRT to increase intimacy and (sexual compatibility) can lead to misuse of testosterone supplements by men to improve performance,” Sidhana tells Health Shots.

This therapy should always be used under the care of a specialist doctor, like an endocrinologist, and with regular follow-up tests to ensure safety and effectiveness.

Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson, who features in a film about sexual awakening, has spoken unfiltered about the benefits of sex. She recently commented that sex is so good that it should be recommended by the UK’s National Health Service! The 66-year-old actress thinks it should be part of people’s health plans, and believes everyone should be able to self-pleasure.

Emma Thompson: ‘You need sex’

During a Q&A at a screening of her film “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande” in London on Sunday, the 66-year-old opened up about the importance of sex, according to Daily Mail. “We need to learn about our own response to: what if when you’re unwell, you can’t make connections, but you need sex?” Emma Thompson said. “You need sex because it’s part of our health plan, if you like. It should really be on the NHS. It should. It’s so good for you.”

Emma Thompson says getting an orgasm is difficult for many women.
Emma Thompson also spoke about how the 2022 film in which she plays a widowed, retired teacher who ropes in a male escort, had impacted older women. “Since the film came out, quite a number of older friends of mine have done that – they’ve hired escorts,” shared Emma Thompson.

Emma Thompson supports self-pleasure

During the event, the actress also shared her opinion on orgasms. “It’s very good to be able to give yourself an orgasm when you need one. And for women, it is notoriously difficult. In fact, the stats are quite alarming. It really is much harder than you think,” said Emma Thompson, pointing out at the orgasm gap.

A study, published in the Archives Of Sexual Behavior, showed that 95 percent of men had orgasms whenever they were sexually intimate. But only 65 percent of women could experience the height of sexual arousal during sex. “One of the things that really surprised me when the film came out was the number of young women who told me they’d never had an orgasm,” said Emma Thompson.

What are the benefits of sex?

Emma Thompson’s views have put the spotlight on the benefits of sex. There are many studies that show that sex can work as a stress buster, help with weight loss and support heart health.

Sex may reduce stress: Sex may work a natural way to reduce stress. A study, published in Biopsychosocial Science and Medicine, explored the effect intimacy with a partner had on the levels of cortisol, stress hormone. The researchers found that intimacy, physical or emotional, helped to reduce cortisol levels.

May be good for the heart: Having sex may have a positive effect on heart health. During a study, published in the Journal Of Health And Social Behavior, it was found that women who have an active sex life have a lower risk of cardiac events.

May increase happiness: Having a healthy sex life may make you feel happier. According to a study, published in the Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization, having more consensual sex and better-quality sex can help to increase happiness.

Better sleep quality: Yes, Emma Thompson was right about orgasms being good. They can trigger the release of prolactin, a hormone that aids in sleep, according to research published in Frontiers.

Weight loss: Looking for a weight loss exercise? Include sex in your fitness routine. Engaging in sex for 30 minutes burns around 200 calories, according to a study published in PLOS One. This suggests that sex may be considered as a significant exercise.

How frequently should I have sex in my fertile period to get pregnant? Will urinating after sex affect my chance to conceive? Planning a pregnancy can be an emotionally charged journey filled with excitement, anxiety, and often, misinformation. One area particularly prone to myths and misconceptions is sex and conception. Many couples unknowingly believe outdated or scientifically incorrect advice that can lead to stress and disappointment. Let us debunk some of the most common sex myths that can hinder, rather than help, your fertility journey.

Myth 1: You must have sex every day or twice a day during your fertile period

This is one of the most common sex myths among couples trying to conceive. While timing is important, frequency beyond reason is not necessary. Science tells us that once an egg is released during ovulation, it survives for about 24 hours. On the other hand, sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to 72 hours. This means that having intercourse every day or every alternate day during your fertile window, is sufficient. More frequent sex won’t necessarily increase your chances. It may, in fact, lead to performance pressure or even fatigue in the relationship. Comfort, emotional connection, and low stress levels also play a big role.

Myth 2: Lying down after sex for an hour is mandatory

Many women are advised to lie flat for a long time after intercourse to “help the sperm reach the egg”. Let’s tell you the sex myth vs fact. While lying down for 10–15 minutes may be beneficial in helping sperm travel upward, there is no scientific evidence that an hour of lying down significantly increases the chances of conception. You don’t have to stay horizontal for an extended period. Just relax for a few minutes post-intercourse and then go about your usual routine — no need to stay still or stress over semen leakage.

Myth 3: Semen leakage means conception won’t happen

It is perfectly natural for some semen to flow out of the vagina after sex. This does not mean the sperm has not reached its destination. The sperm needed for fertilization moves quickly into the cervical canal, leaving the seminal fluid behind. So, if you notice fluid leaking out after intercourse, there’s no need to worry. This is completely normal and doesn’t reduce your chances of getting pregnant.

Myth 4: You must avoid urinating after sex

Some women are told not to urinate after intercourse as it might flush out the sperm. This is another myth. Urinating after sex does not impact sperm movement or implantation. In fact, urinating helps prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs), which can be common in women who are sexually active. Just avoid washing or douching the vagina aggressively post-intercourse, as that could flush out semen and disturb the vaginal flora.

Myth 5: Using lubricants is safe while trying to conceive

While lubricants can help improve comfort during sex, most commercially available lubricants — including water-based ones — are not sperm-friendly. In fact, many of them can reduce sperm motility or kill sperm altogether. If lubrication is needed, look for fertility-friendly options that are specifically designed to be sperm-safe.

Myth 6: Certain sex positions increase chances of conception

Many believe that missionary or doggy-style positions are best for conception. But no scientific studies back this up. The truth is, sperm are built to swim and reach the egg regardless of position. The most important factor is timing — having intercourse during your fertile window — not the sexual position. Choose positions that are comfortable and help maintain intimacy rather than stress you out.

Myth 7: Sex must happen at a specific time of day

Some couples may enjoy morning sex, but there is no evidence to suggest that having sex in the morning, afternoon, or night significantly affects the chances of getting pregnant. What’s more important is aligning intercourse with your fertile window, not the time of day. Focus more on your cycle and less on the clock.

What is the fertile window for pregnancy?

A key takeaway for anyone trying to conceive is to understand when ovulation occurs. Ovulation typically happens 14 days before the start of the next menstrual period. For a woman with a 28-day cycle, ovulation will likely occur around day 14. In a 35-day cycle, ovulation might happen between days 19–21.

Your fertile window usually spans five to six days before ovulation and one day after. Some signs that may indicate ovulation include:

Clear, stretchy cervical mucus (similar to egg whites)

Mild lower abdominal pain (ovulation pain)

Slight rise in basal body temperature

Positive ovulation predictor test (LH surge)

Tracking these signs or using ovulation kits can help couples time intercourse more accurately.

Should you douche or clean after intercourse?

Vaginal douching is not recommended at any time — and especially not when trying to conceive. It can disturb the natural balance of bacteria and wash away healthy cervical mucus that aids sperm transport. Regular douching can also increase the risk of infections and may even lead to fertility issues in the long term. Simply wiping gently or washing the external genitals with plain water is sufficient.

Every couple’s journey is unique

The journey to parenthood is deeply personal and unique for every couple. Some may conceive within the first few months, while others may take longer. The key is patience, proper planning, and trusting credible sources for information.

Avoid comparing your journey with others. Stressing over myths and misinformation can rob the joy from your intimate relationship. Open communication with your partner and your doctor is far more effective than relying on internet hearsay or anecdotal advice.

Sex is, after all, also a form of intimacy and bonding. While trying to conceive can add pressure to your sex life, don’t let myths and misconceptions dictate how you experience it. Stick to the facts, understand your body, and focus on healthy lifestyle habits.

When to see a doctor

If you’ve been trying to conceive for a year (or six months if you’re over 35) without success, consult a fertility specialist to rule out any underlying conditions. With the right guidance, most couples do eventually conceive — it just takes time, patience, and reliable information.

Sex after menopause doesn’t have to retire into the background, but it’s a truth many women face quietly. With menopause – when a woman’s menstrual cycle ends for good – often comes a wave of unexpected changes: vaginal dryness, a dip in libido, and fluctuating emotions that can make intimacy feel unfamiliar or even uncomfortable. Experts say that with the right information, a bit of patience and self-assurance, it is possible to revive the physical and emotional connection with your partner. Let’s explore what really happens to your body once you hit menopause and how to navigate desire, dryness, and deeper connection post-45.

What happens to sex drive after menopause?

As women reach their mid-40s and beyond, the body undergoes a range of hormonal changes associated with perimenopause and menopause.

Explaining these changes, gynecologic oncology specialist Dr Rubina Shanawaz Z, tells Health Shots, “The levels of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone begin to drop significantly. Estrogen plays a crucial role in maintaining vaginal health, moisture, and elasticity. When estrogen declines, it leads to physical changes such as vaginal dryness, thinning of the vaginal walls, and reduced blood flow, which can affect arousal and comfort during sex. Progesterone and testosterone also influence libido and overall sexual responsiveness, so their decrease can result in lowered desire and less spontaneous interest in sex.”

Sex and menopause: Side effects on sexual health

Here are some common sexual health issues women face post menopause:

1. Vaginal dryness

Facing a dry vagina is one of the most common experiences for women after 40-45 years of age. “This occurs because estrogen helps maintain the natural lubrication and structural integrity of vaginal tissue. As levels fall, the vaginal walls become thinner, less elastic, and more fragile. These changes make intercourse uncomfortable or even painful for some women,” says Dr Rubina.

2. Lower libido or sexual desire

This happens due to reduced blood flow to the vaginal area, and that affects sensitivity and arousal.

3. Shift in vaginal pH

When the vaginal pH balance shifts, there is increased risk of irritation and infections. Maintaining overall hydration helps somewhat, but localized treatments like estrogen creams or lubricants are often needed to ease discomfort and improve sexual well-being.

4. Painful sex

Many women experience painful intercourse after 45 due to a condition known as vaginal atrophy, or more broadly, Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM). This results from declining estrogen levels, which lead to thinning, drying, and inflammation of the vaginal tissues. As a result, sex can become uncomfortable or even painful

The expert adds: “Women often wonder whether it’s normal to lose interest in sex after menopause. The short answer is: yes. It is a natural and common experience. Hormonal decline directly impacts sexual desire, especially the reduction in estrogen and testosterone, both of which are linked to libido. Emotional and psychological aspects such as fatigue, stress, body image concerns, or changes in partner dynamics can also contribute to this shift in interest. Moreover, if sex becomes physically uncomfortable, women may subconsciously begin to avoid it.”

However, a drop in sexual interest doesn’t mean the end of intimacy or pleasure. Many women find that with the right support — whether medical, emotional, or relational — they can rediscover or redefine their sexual lives post-menopause.

How to increase sex drive during menopause?

Open communication with a partner, use of vaginal moisturizers or hormone therapies, and even simple lifestyle changes can make a significant difference. There are several effective treatments available to ease discomfort and restore sexual pleasure.

Water-based lubricants and vaginal moisturizers can provide immediate relief from dryness.

Localized estrogen therapy (like creams, rings, or tablets) helps rebuild vaginal tissue over time.

DHEA, a non-hormonal option, is also available in suppository form and has been shown to improve lubrication and sexual satisfaction.

Other non-hormonal approaches include laser therapy, pelvic floor therapy, and mindfulness-based sexual therapy. Each woman’s needs are unique, so working with a gynecologist can help tailor the right treatment plan.

The link between menopause, mental health and sex

The emotional and psychological toll of menopause can be just as impactful as the physical changes, psychiatrist Dr Sachin Baliga tells Health Shots.

“Hormonal shifts can cause mood swings, anxiety, and even depression, all of which contribute to a lowered sex drive. Feeling emotionally disconnected or overwhelmed by life’s demands can make intimacy feel like a burden rather than a joy,” he says, adding that many women suffer painful sex in silence post mid-40s.

Mental well-being plays a key role in sexual desire, and seeking support — whether through therapy, support groups, or open conversations — can help ease the journey.

Menopause can also deeply affect a woman’s body image and self-image.

“Weight gain, hot flashes, and other visible changes may lower body confidence and self-esteem. To add to that, it makes her more prone to psychiatric issues such as depression and anxiety due to lack of the protective effect of estrogen she had all these years,” adds Dr Baliga.

These shifts can impact intimacy, not just physically but emotionally making one feel less attractive or less connected to a partner.

Communication and reassurance from loved ones play a vital role, as does self-compassion.

There are many causes of low sex drive in women.

When Aakriti and Akshay (names changed) lost their baby at 8 weeks, an invisible wall of grief settled between them. Aakriti was emotionally and physically broken, while her husband who battled his own emotions, wasn’t sure what to say or do to make her feel better. Instead of getting closer over their shared grief, intimacy in their relationship took a hit. “At times, he would be hesitant about even holding hands, and I started self-doubting about the way I looked and felt. We wanted to reconnect, but didn’t know how,” Aakriti says. For many couples, struggling with emotional and physical intimacy after miscarriage is common.

Communication and professional guidance can go a long way in helping such couples heal together, senior gynaecologist Dr Rita Bakshi, tells Health Shots.

“A miscarriage or pregnancy loss is a very painful experience for any couple. A woman may experience physical pain, sadness, stress, and more at this time. There are many couples who may feel disconnected from each other or are unsure about how to become close again. There are some people who may feel scared to try again and some may not feel ready to be physically close again. So, it’s important to give yourself and your partner some time, patience, and love at this difficult time,” adds Dr Bakshi, the co-founder of RISAA IVF.

It is important to understand how to slowly return to intimacy after a miscarriage or loss, and how to support the emotional health of your partner during this time.

How does miscarriage affect emotionally?

A miscarriage can be very painful emotionally. There are many people who feel very sad, confused, or even blame themselves that it might be their fault. These emotions are normal and part of the recovery procedure.

Here are some common emotional changes after a miscarriage, as per Dr Bakshi

Feeling very sad or crying easily

Thinking it was your fault (even when it may not be)

Feeling angry or upset

Feeling alone or that no one understands

Being scared of getting pregnant again

Not sleeping or eating well

Not enjoying things that you usually like

Feeling distant from your partner or loved ones

When is the right time for intimacy after miscarriage?

There is no fixed time for couples to resume sex after miscarriage. It totally depends on their physical and emotional health. “It is very important for the partners to feel comfortable and not feel forced. At this time, a man plays a very crucial role in her wife’s life because he is the only one who is more attached to her emotionally and physically and they are feeling the same loss,” explains Dr Bakshi.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

Wait at least 2 to 3 weeks or until bleeding and pain stop

Make sure that both partners feel emotionally ready

Don’t rush or feel pressured

Talk openly about your feelings with your partner

Listen to your body and respect your emotions

Ask your doctor if you’re unsure when it’s safe to try again

How to support each other during this time?

A miscarriage or loss can be very difficult for both husband and wife. They may feel different emotions and that is completely normal. It is important for couples to support each other at this time by doing simple things.

Here are some simple ways to support each other:

Listen carefully: Let your partner share their feelings without interrupting or judging them.

Share your feelings: Share how you feel so your partner understands you too.

Be patient: Healing takes time so it’s important to give each other time.

Show love: A small hug, kind words, or just being there can help a lot.

Don’t blame: This is nobody’s fault and it’s important to remind each other about this.

Seek help if needed: Talking to a counselor can help a lot in this difficult time.

Additionally, it is important to know that being close doesn’t always mean to have sex. After a pregnancy loss, there are many other ways to feel close and connected with your partner.

“You can try hugging each other, sitting close and cuddling, holding hands, giving a soft massage, going out for a walk or a simple date, talking and sharing your feelings,” says Dr Bakshi.

What if one partner is ready and the other isn’t?

It is very common for one partner to feel ready to be close again after a miscarriage. On the other hand, the other partner may take some time to be close again. This can lead to confusion, sadness, or even frustration. However, it is important to remember that both feelings are normal.

“Try to talk openly and calmly instead of feeling hurt or upset. It is important to let each other explain how you feel without pressure. Respect your partner’s space and focus on emotional closeness first. Physical connection can come later when both of you feel ready,” explains Dr Bakshi.

It is important to take slow steps, show care, and be patient with each other to help you grow stronger together during this time. Healing emotionally and physically doesn’t happen at the same time for everyone and that is okay. And remember, it’s always okay to ask for help if you need it.

Oral sex is often perceived as a safer alternative to penetrative intercourse, primarily because it eliminates the risk of pregnancy. However, it is important to understand that it still carries health risks, particularly when performed without protection. For women, the vagina can be especially vulnerable to infections due to direct contact with the mouth, which may transmit bacteria or viruses. From sexually transmitted infections (STIs) to urinary tract infections (UTIs), unprotected oral sex can lead to a range of health concerns. Recognising these risks and adopting safe practices, like using barriers or maintaining proper hygiene, is essential for protecting your intimate health and making informed decisions about your sexual well-being.

Is oral sex entirely safe?

“No, if practiced without protection, oral sex can expose individuals to sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and urinary tract infections (UTIs),” says gynecologist Dr Sandeep Chaddha. It is crucial to adopt safety measures to significantly lower the chances of contracting an infection. Always prioritise safe practices to protect your health.

What are the specific health risks?

Oral sex can transmit various infections, including herpes (oral and genital types), hepatitis A, B, C, gonorrhea, shigellosis, chlamydia, HIV, and syphilis. These can spread if infected fluids come into contact with any sores, cuts, or ulcers. Additionally, bacteria from the colon and vagina can enter the urethra during oral sex, potentially leading to a urinary tract infection. Consulting a gynecologist immediately if you suspect an STI or other infection is always advised. For more details on common infections, see the FAQs section of the original article on oral sex safety.

How can I reduce the risks of oral sex?

Effective communication with your partner is paramount. If engaging in oral sex with multiple partners, the risk of STIs increases, as stated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Practicing good hygiene, such as washing genitals with unscented soap and warm water before and after, also helps. For an additional barrier, consider using a dental dam to prevent direct contact between the mouth and genitals, acting as a protective layer.

Why is STI testing important?

Regular STI screenings are essential for maintaining sexual health, especially if you engage in oral sex. Tests for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis are recommended. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also suggests HIV testing for individuals aged 15 to 65 years. Staying informed and proactive about your sexual health is crucial. You can find more advice on preventing an itchy vagina after oral sex in related health articles.

Stress, anxiety, and the everyday hustle can affect one’s self-confidence and performance in the bedroom. However, yoga, an ancient practice rooted in mindfulness and physical well-being, can provide valuable techniques to enhance stamina and improve intimate experiences. Specific yoga breathing techniques can help you last longer in bed and foster a deeper connection with your partner.

Do breathing techniques help you last longer in bed?

Before we delve into specific techniques, it is important to understand how breathing can impact your intimate life. The way we breathe has a significant impact on our physical and mental well-being. When we’re anxious or excited, our breathing often becomes quick and shallow, which can lead to premature ejaculation or performance anxiety, according to the National Social Anxiety Centre.

“On the other hand, controlled breathing can create a sense of calm and enhance awareness, allowing for a more profound experience.
2. Nadi shodhana (alternate nostril breathing)

Repeat this cycle for 5-10 minutes.

Benefits: This technique helps reduce anxiety and balance emotions, allowing you to feel more grounded during intimate experiences.

Allow your inhalations to be passive.

Repeat this exercise for 30 rounds, gradually building your stamina over time.

Benefits: This technique energises the body, enhances lung capacity, and improves blood circulation—all contributing to improved overall performance as per The Yoga Institute.

4. Diaphragmatic breathing

Diaphragmatic breathing, also known as belly breathing, encourages deeper breaths and relaxation.

How to practice:

Lie on your back or sit comfortably.

Place one hand on your chest and the other on your belly.

Focus on the rise and fall of your belly.

Practice for 5-10 minutes daily.

Benefits: This technique enhances oxygen exchange and lowers stress, making it easier to maintain focus and control.

Additional tips for lasting longer in bed

While yoga breathing techniques can significantly improve your stamina, consider complementing them with the following practices shared by Dr Bhandari:

Mindfulness: Practice being present with your partner. This reduces distractions and anxiety, allowing for a more fulfilling experience.

Communication: Openly share your feelings and desires with your partner. Understanding each other’s needs can enhance intimacy and satisfaction.

Physical fitness: Yoga itself is an excellent form of exercise that builds strength and flexibility, contributing to better physical performance.

Limit distractions: Create a calming atmosphere free from interruptions. This allows you to focus entirely on your partner and the moment.

Incorporating breathing techniques into your intimate life

Once you’ve familiarised yourself with these breathing techniques, consider integrating them into your intimate moments:

Before intimacy: Spend a few minutes practising one or two of the methods to calm your mind and enhance your connection.

During intimacy: Focus on your breath. If you feel overwhelmed or anxious, pause for a moment to take deep, controlled breaths. This can help you stay present and extend the experience.

After intimacy, continue practising deep breathing to foster relaxation and deepen your connection with your partner. It’s a great way to transition back to the outside world together.

Maintaining sexual health is more important than ever! An important aspect of sexual wellness is the health of our sexual organs and reproductive systems. Yoga for sexual health offers a holistic approach, combining physical postures, breathing techniques, and mindfulness, making it an excellent practice for both body and mind. We’ll explore five yoga asanas—Paryankasana, Bhadrasana, Setu Bandhasana, Sarvangasana, and Siddhasana—recommended by yoga expert Dr Hansaji Yogendra. These poses release tension, energise the pelvic organs, strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, and help balance hormones, all of which contribute to enhanced sexual wellness.

Does yoga improve sexual health?

Yoga can significantly improve sexual health. The practice of yoga focuses on enhancing physical flexibility, strength, and balance while also promoting mental relaxation and emotional well-being.

Here are some ways yoga can be beneficial for sexual health:

Increased blood circulation: Many yoga poses stimulate blood flow to the pelvic region, which can enhance arousal and sexual function.

Strengthening the pelvic floor: Certain asanas target and strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, which are crucial for sexual performance and pleasure.

Improved flexibility: Regular practice can lead to increased flexibility, resulting in greater ease of movement during sexual activity and a more satisfying experience.

Stress reduction: Yoga emphasises mindfulness and relaxation, which can reduce anxiety and stress, factors that often inhibit sexual desire and performance.

Enhanced body awareness: Practising yoga helps individuals connect with their bodies, which can lead to improved intimacy and confidence in their sexual experiences.

Hormonal balance: Some yoga poses can support hormonal regulation, which is vital for maintaining a healthy libido.

5 yoga poses for sexual health

Incorporating these five yoga poses into your wellness routine can lead to significant improvements in sexual health and overall intimacy.

1. Paryankasana (reclining pose)

Paryankasana is a relaxing asana that helps release tension in the body while improving blood circulation, making it an excellent choice for yoga to support overall health, including sexual health. This reclined pose encourages deep breathing and relaxation, both of which are vital for overall well-being.

Benefits:

Enhances blood circulation: By lying down and relaxing, blood flow improves, offering nourishment to your pelvic organs.

Promotes relaxation: This position can help ease stress and anxiety, creating a more conducive mental state for intimacy and emotional connection.

How to practice:

Lie on your back with your legs extended.

Slowly bend your knees and bring them towards your chest, wrapping your arms around your shins.

Hold this position for a few minutes, focusing on your breath.

2. Bhadrasana (gracious pose)

Bhadrasana is a seated posture that enhances flexibility and strengthens the pelvic floor muscles, making it beneficial for yoga for sexual health. This asana fosters inner calmness and prepares you for meditation.

Benefits:

Strengthens pelvic floor muscles: Regular practice can build strength, which is beneficial for sexual health.

Improves flexibility: This pose opens the hips, promoting better blood circulation to the lower body.

How to practice:

Sit on the ground, bringing the soles of your feet together.

Hold your feet with your hands, and sit up tall.

Breathe deeply and hold the position for a few minutes.

3. Setu bandhasana (bridge pose)

Setu Bandhasana, also known as Bridge Pose, is a powerful exercise that targets the lower back and pelvic area, making it an effective form of yoga for sexual health. It enhances blood flow to the reproductive organs and strengthens the body as a whole.

Benefits:

Increases blood flow: This pose effectively promotes circulation to the pelvic region, which can enhance sexual performance.

Strengthens back and core: A strong back supports better posture, which can improve overall confidence and bodily function.

How to practice:

Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor.

Press into your feet and lift your hips towards the sky.

Hold for 15-30 seconds while breathing steadily, then lower back down to the starting position.

4. Sarvangasana (shoulder stand)

Known as the mother of asanas, Sarvangasana is a significant inversion pose in yoga that helps regulate hormonal balance and improve blood flow to the pelvic organs, promoting overall sexual health.

Benefits:

Oral sex is more than just a pleasurable part of intimacy. It can also offer surprising health benefits. For many couples, it is a meaningful way to connect, whether as part of foreplay or as a standalone expression of affection. Beyond the physical pleasure, some research points to potential perks like reduced stress, better sleep, and even anti-ageing effects. But just as important as the act itself is how it is approached. Open communication, mutual respect, and a clear understanding of boundaries are key to making the experience safe, consensual, and deeply satisfying for both partners.

Can oral sex help with stress and sleep?

Yes, some research suggests a connection between oral sex and improved well-being. A study published in the Cell Journal indicates that semen contains melatonin, a hormone known to aid better sleep. Additionally, the act itself can release feel-good chemicals like oxytocin and endorphins, which help reduce stress and foster emotional bonding. Dr Manvi Verma, a cosmetic gyneacologist and female sexologist, suggests that regular sexual activity, including oral sex, may boost immune function and improve cardiovascular health. While more research is needed to confirm the extent of these benefits, early findings point to a range of possible wellness perks beyond just physical pleasure.

Are there any surprising health benefits of oral sex?

Interestingly, semen contains a compound called spermidine, which a study in Nature Cell Biology suggests may help slow down the aging process. This research even explores the possibility of injecting spermidine into cells for anti-aging effects. Additionally, a study from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology observed that women who engage in oral sex once or twice a week might have a lower risk of breast cancer, possibly due to certain chemicals found in semen.

Why is personal choice and communication important?

While oral sex is widely practiced, establishing a clear channel of honest communication with your partner is paramount. Both individuals must openly discuss what they are comfortable with and what boundaries they wish to set. This ensures that the experience is respectful, consensual, and enjoyable for everyone involved. Making an informed decision based on mutual understanding is key.

Does oral sex eliminate all risks?

No, while oral sex does not carry the risk of pregnancy, it does come with other potential health risks, such as the transmission of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Therefore, an informed decision about engaging in oral sex must always consider these risks and involve appropriate safety measures. Understanding whether oral sex is safe involves recognizing both its benefits and its associated precautions.
