Alberta hospitals resume normal operations following major emergency response

Code Orange activations have ended following a coordinated emergency response to the tragic incident at CFB Wainwright, which involved hospitals and emergency medical services across Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Alberta’s acute care system has returned to regular operations following a large-scale emergency response to the deadly incident at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright on October 17.

Acute Care Alberta confirmed on October 18 that all Code Orange activations across the province had been stood down following an emergency response involving hospitals, ambulance services and healthcare professionals from Alberta and Saskatchewan.

The incident, involving a rapidly spreading fire during military training, resulted in four deaths and dozens of injuries. The scale of the emergency required extensive coordination between provincial health services, emergency responders and receiving hospitals.

Extensive emergency medical response

Emergency Health Services–Alberta deployed 30 emergency response units directly to Wainwright, including 22 ground ambulances, six fixed-wing aircraft and two helicopters.

The response involved provincial emergency medical services and contracted partners from both Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Emergency operations continued for more than 10 hours as medical teams stabilized patients and coordinated transfers to hospitals throughout the province.

Patients were initially treated at Wainwright Healthcare Centre before being transferred to four major facilities:

  • University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton
  • Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton
  • Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary
  • Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre

The coordinated response helped distribute patients requiring specialized treatment across multiple healthcare facilities.

Hospitals return to regular operations

During the emergency, several Alberta hospitals activated Code Orange protocols, which are used when a major incident produces multiple seriously injured patients requiring a coordinated healthcare response.

The emergency placed significant pressure on hospital resources, particularly in Edmonton, where officials temporarily advised residents to consider alternative emergency departments when possible.

Although Code Orange activations have ended, Acute Care Alberta cautioned that hospitals continue to face high patient volumes and localized staffing pressures, particularly in the Wainwright and Flagstaff County areas.

Patients injured in the incident continue to receive treatment, and officials anticipate that their ongoing care will require substantial hospital resources.

The agency emphasized that returning to regular operations does not mean the impact on the healthcare system has ended.

Coordinated response highlights emergency preparedness

The incident demonstrated the importance of coordinated emergency planning, particularly when a mass-casualty event occurs in a smaller community with limited local hospital capacity.

The ability to mobilize ground and air ambulances, coordinate patient transfers and activate emergency protocols across multiple hospitals was central to the healthcare response.

Acute Care Alberta acknowledged the efforts of physicians, nurses, paramedics, emergency responders and other healthcare professionals who worked under exceptionally difficult circumstances.

The agency said its focus remains on supporting affected patients, their families and healthcare providers as recovery continues.

While the immediate emergency response has concluded, the incident highlights the importance of maintaining coordinated emergency medical systems capable of responding to large-scale incidents across provincial and regional boundaries.
