CARY, N.C. — A 48-acre University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) Health campus taking shape near the Cary-Durham line will bring outpatient specialty care to the area before adding a community hospital.
Residents and officials from Cary and Durham joined UNC Health system leaders for an Oct. 6 groundbreaking ceremony, according to a press release from UNC Health.
Opening plans call for a six-story medical office building totaling 192,000 square feet and a separate 900-space parking deck in summer 2028. According to UNC Health, the building will offer cancer treatment, heart and vascular care, orthopedics, obstetrics and gynecology, imaging, laboratory services and a pharmacy.
The outpatient cancer program will place radiation oncology, infusion and clinical trials alongside the Comprehensive Cancer Support Program. UNC Health describes the arrangement as a way to bring treatment and support services together throughout patients’ care. Other specialties identified in the release include rheumatology, urology and dermatology.
ABC11 reported that a cancer survivor at the ceremony described traveling to Chapel Hill for treatment. She said remote work had helped her accommodate the commute, while warning that transportation expenses and travel time can pose barriers for other patients. She identified Cary, Durham, Apex and Morrisville as communities that could benefit from treatment closer to home.
UNC Health CEO Dr. Cristy Page emphasized coordination. “The goal of UNC Health is to connect patients with the right care and expertise while keeping care close to home whenever possible,” Page said in a release from UNC Health. “Across the Triangle, we are working to better integrate care so that patients have a seamless experience.”
Hospital construction is expected to begin in 2028, with 152 acute care beds scheduled to open in early 2032. The projects have received state certificate-of-need approvals, according to UNC Health.
UNC Health points to an expected 44,000 additional regional residents by 2035 as a driver of demand. Campus employment is projected to reach about 1,000 people.
Skanska is the contractor for the first phase of the project, with Faulconer Construction providing heavy civil infrastructure and site development work.
This article is based on a UNC Health press release and reporting by ABC11’s Tamara Scott, both published Oct. 6, 2026.
