Hydration Hacks: Creative Ways to Encourage Dogs to Drink More Water
Keeping your dog hydrated is especially important throughout the summer months. Unlike humans, pups don’t sweat to cool themselves down. Instead, they cool down by panting, which causes them to lose moisture and fluids.
Getting your dog to drink enough water can help replace those lost fluids, support healthy digestion, and keep them cool. Proper hydration is also crucial for regulating body temperature and reducing the risk of dehydration and heat-related illnesses during hot weather. As a general guide, dogs need about one ounce of water per pound of body weight each day, with more required on hot days or after active play. While some dogs are natural water lovers and drink throughout the day, others need a little extra encouragement to sip more frequently. Let’s look at some fun and easy ways to help your pup stay hydrated.
FROZEN TREATS AND PUPSICLES
A fun way to help keep your pup hydrated is to make homemade dog pupsicles with broth and/or dog-friendly fruits and vegetables high in water. Not only do frozen treats keep your dog hydrated and cool, but they also provide a fun and tasty source of enrichment, as licking frozen treats can encourage pups to slow down and stay mentally stimulated and engaged.
Pupsicles can be easy to make, prepared ahead of time, and stored in the freezer for whenever your dog needs a hydrating, fun snack. Try ingredients like low-sodium chicken or beef broth, plain Greek yogurt, and dog-safe fruits and vegetables like apples, pineapple, strawberries, watermelon, cucumber, and carrots to make tasty, lickable treats your pup will enjoy.
Remember to avoid adding ingredients that are toxic or hazardous to dogs, such as grapes, xylitol, seeds/stems from certain fruit, etc. As always, check with your veterinarian before adding new food to your dog’s diet and serve all treats in moderation.
ADD FLAVOR TO THEIR WATER
Adding a pet-safe flavor boost to your pup’s water can encourage them to drink more, especially if they’re not naturally big water drinkers.
Try adding a splash of low-sodium chicken or beef broth, or a small amount of tuna or salmon water (if they already enjoy that on its own) to give their water a savory flavor. You can also add pet-safe fruit like sliced apples, watermelon, or cucumber slices to add a bit of variety to their daily water routine.
SET UP WATER STATIONS AROUND YOUR HOME
Placing multiple water bowls throughout your home can help make sure your pup always has easy access to fresh water, which can be helpful for senior dogs or those experiencing mobility issues who may be less willing to walk long distances for water.
Having several water stations also means there is always a nearby option, even if one location is empty or needs to be refreshed. The easier it is for your dog to access water, the more likely they are to take a drink and stay hydrated throughout the day.
Be sure to wash water bowls daily and refill them regularly to keep the water clean and appealing.
TRY A PET WATER FOUNTAIN
A pet water fountain can be a fun, encouraging way to get your dog to drink more water. Many pups are naturally curious about moving water as they can instinctively associate it with freshness and safety, so this addition can seem more appealing than water in a traditional bowl.
Many pet water fountains come with built-in filters to help remove dirt and hair, keep water clean, and remove bad tastes from tap water. Plus, circulating water can stay colder, making it more refreshing, especially on warmer days
It may take your pup a little while to get used to the fountain, so consider placing it next to their familiar water bowl until they’re comfortable with it.
