An MRI machine does not produce a uniform magnetic field throughout the room. Its strength is highest at the center and decreases with distance, much like the heat from a fire fades the farther you step away. For a three Tesla MRI, this drop is such that the field reaches one Tesla or less right at its immediate periphery.

The ASTM F2503-20 standard defines three categories for equipment used in MRI environments: MR Safe (safe in any MRI environment), MR Conditional (safe under specific conditions of field strength, gradient, and specific absorption rate), and MR Unsafe (never to be brought into the MRI room).
