How to Make Your Cat Happier in Just 5 Minutes

Many cat parents rightly worry their cats are bored—especially indoor cats who nap more than they play and quickly lose interest in toys. When playtime falls flat, it’s common to wonder how to keep our cats mentally engaged and happy.

What if the solution isn’t another toy, but a different way of offering something your cat likely already enjoys? Food puzzles are one of my favourite ways to enhance the lives of cats at any age. They provide both physical and mental stimulation in a way that feels instinctive, while also encouraging problem-solving and boosting confidence.

Most indoor cats are largely deprived the opportunity to forage for their food.

Foraging: a Natural Feline Behaviour

Foraging is an instinctive behaviour in many animals, cats included. Outdoor cats naturally forage. This behaviour is an inherent part of their biology, regardless of whether they are well-fed house pets or feral cats relying on hunting for survival. Most indoor cats are largely deprived the opportunity to forage for their food. Enter food puzzles. With their sharp eyesight and amazing sense of smell, cats can easily detect where there is tasty food; a food puzzle challenges them to figure out the steps needed to get to it. This taps directly into their natural strengths: curiosity, intelligence, and persistence. Research in cat welfare has shown that food puzzles encourage cats to engage in natural foraging behaviours, which can improve mental stimulation and overall wellbeing—especially for indoor cats who generally lack opportunities to hunt.

Food Puzzles for Cats

Food puzzles benefit many types of cats, including those who are highly food-motivated, have extra energy, or show little interest in traditional toys. I’ve introduced food puzzles to kittens under six months old and senior cats approaching 20. The key is matching the puzzle to each cat’s abilities and motivation. For beginners—or older, less motivated cats—it’s best to start with something simple. Household items like a muffin tin or an egg carton make excellent starter puzzles. As cats gain confidence, you can introduce more complex options. For highly food-motivated or agile cats, puzzles with sliders, hidden compartments, or multiple sections provide a greater challenge.

When stocking food puzzles, you can include treats or dry food. It’s important to stay within your cat’s dietary needs, especially for cats on special diets. Be sure to reduce your cat’s dinner portion to account for any additional calories consumed as treats. If your cat requires a limited diet or prescription food, check with your veterinarian before using special snacks in a food puzzle. Finding a motivating treat to place inside is essential—after all, we’re asking cats to work for their reward.

Are Food Puzzles Right For Your Cat?

In my professional experience, food puzzles are especially helpful for cats who seem bored with toys, seek a lot of attention, or explore everything around the house. They can be used daily for enrichment or even to deliver meals. Tools like snuffle mats can help slow down fast eaters and make mealtime more engaging. Many cats show noticeable improvements in their behaviour once the right puzzle is introduced.

Confidence Building

Food puzzles also build confidence. For shy or nervous cats, successfully completing a puzzle is a small victory that reinforces their abilities and reduces stress. I’ve even used puzzles during new-cat introductions to create positive associations and support low pressure transitions.

How to Get Started With Food Puzzles

If your cat struggles with puzzles, start simple and gradually increase the difficulty. One of my favourite commercial options is the TRIXIE 5-in-1 Activity Board, which offers multiple challenge levels and is easy for cat parents to set up and clean.

There are also plenty of DIY options online, which can be a fun family project or a way to make puzzles for local shelters.

Food puzzles aren’t just a way to feed your cat—they provide mental stimulation, encourage natural behaviours, and help build confidence. Every small success adds up, keeping cats curious, engaged, and more confident in their world. Making puzzles part of their routine gives cats daily enrichment that’s both fun and rewarding.
