Average cardiologist pay: $700K-$1 million

Average cardiologist pay is now topping $700,000, with surgeons now averaging $1 million, as the specialty sees big gains in productivity.

According to data from MedAxiom, average pay for cardiologists was $727,712, reflecting a 5% bump from 2024 data. In addition, every cardiology subspecialty reported the highest compensation in the survey’s history.

Leading the pack were cardiac surgeons, whose average pay exceeded $1 million for the first time in the survey’s history. Pay for that group was up from $942,700 in 2024.

Electrophysiologists reported an average pay of $803,000. General/noninvasive cardiologists reported average comp of $654,848, and advanced heart failure cardiologists reported average pay of $662,297.

Here are other data highlights from the survey:

Productivity gains. All cardiology subspecialties reported gains in productivity. The biggest was among cardiologists specializing in advanced heart failure, with a year-over-year productivity gain of 11%.

Average work RVUs for electrophysiologists also jumped 10%.

Volumes/panel size. New patient volumes and new patient visits reached record highs in 2025, with both growing by 18% over the last five years.

Cardiologists reported carrying average panels of more than 2,000 patients, and median new patient volume reached a record of 727 in 2025. That latter number was also up 18% from 2024.

APP support. The use of advanced practice providers (APPs) by cardiologists has boomed. APP productivity in the specialty exceeded 2,000 work RVUs for the first time in the survey, exceeding 2,000 for the first time. That’s an increase of 30% since 2021.

Advanced imaging. These studies grew, with median volumes for advanced imaging jumping 36% from 2024-25 to 38 studies for every 1,000 active patients. The ratio of imaging studies to cardiac cath procedures exceeded 50%.

Ablations. Electrophysiology volumes have also jumped, with median ablations per electrophysiologist rising 140% over the last five years.

Gender differences. Female cardiologists earned about 85% of their male colleagues: $632,368 vs. $745,998. Female cardiologists reported 78% of work RVUs of their male colleagues.

Becker’s Cardiology reported that more than 60% of female cardiologists practice general/noninvasive cardiology, which pays less than interventional cardiology.

More information is available from a MedAxiom press release, which offers a link to the full report.
