Maharashtra: 58 medical officers terminated as Govt cracks down on absentee doctors

Mumbai: To address absenteeism and improve accountability, the Maharashtra government has initiated strict disciplinary action against doctors in state-run hospitals, resulting in the termination of 58 medical officers and action against hundreds more. 

According to the news reports, Minister for Public Health and Family Welfare Prakash Abitkar informed the Legislative Council that notices were issued to 710 doctors for unauthorised absence, of which 442 have already faced disciplinary proceedings. The decision is part of a broader effort to ensure the availability of healthcare professionals and strengthen healthcare delivery, particularly in public institutions.

The government has also prioritised tackling the rising incidence of cancer. Preventive and curative initiatives are being accelerated, including a targeted vaccination drive for adolescent girls aged 14 and 15. Additionally, a proposal for a comprehensive cancer screening program for individuals above 30 years has been submitted to the Asian Development Bank. Plans are underway to establish cancer treatment facilities and day-care centres across the state in a phased manner.

Efforts to improve governance in the procurement of medicines have also been highlighted. Since February 2023, the Maharashtra Medical Goods Procurement Authority has been overseeing a centralised and transparent tendering process. This replaces the earlier system, under which the Haffkine Institute managed procurement between 2017 and 2020. The new mechanism is designed to ensure timely supply and reduce irregularities.

In a related development, Industries Minister Uday Samant announced the formation of a special task force to tackle the issue of bogus doctors and unauthorised nursing homes. The task force, chaired by the Additional Chief Secretary of the Urban Development Department, will include senior officials from health and administrative departments. It is expected to review the current situation and recommend stricter regulations.
