SickKids and Microsoft announce five-year partnership to advance AI-powered pediatric care

Strategic agreement will strengthen cloud infrastructure, connect clinical information and support more personalized approaches to diagnosis, treatment and prevention.

The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto has announced a five-year strategic partnership with Microsoft Canada aimed at accelerating digital transformation and expanding the use of artificial intelligence to support pediatric healthcare.

Announced October 20, the agreement will strengthen the hospital’s digital infrastructure and support its Precision Child Health initiative, which seeks to provide more individualized care by combining clinical information, research and advanced technologies.

Under the partnership, SickKids will expand its use of Microsoft Azure as its primary cloud platform, creating a more connected and scalable environment for clinical systems and healthcare data.

The collaboration will explore how cloud computing, artificial intelligence and advanced analytics can help clinicians and researchers access information more effectively, identify emerging health risks and develop more personalized approaches to patient care.

Building a stronger digital foundation

A major component of the agreement involves improving the technology infrastructure supporting key clinical systems, including the hospital’s electronic health record.

By strengthening connections between clinical, research and operational information, SickKids hopes to provide healthcare teams with more timely access to relevant data.

The initiative is also intended to support the responsible development of AI applications that could eventually assist with earlier diagnosis, more targeted treatment and improved prediction of patient outcomes.

These capabilities remain areas for development and exploration under the partnership, rather than newly announced clinical tools already in routine use.

Supporting healthcare professionals

The agreement extends beyond technology infrastructure.

Microsoft Canada will provide Azure credits to support exploration of new cloud and AI solutions, along with technology partner assistance and investments in digital skills development.

These resources are intended to help SickKids clinicians, researchers and administrative teams build the knowledge required to evaluate and use emerging technologies effectively.

Workforce education will be an important component as healthcare organizations increasingly examine how artificial intelligence can support clinical decisions, research and hospital operations.

Advancing precision child health

The partnership supports SickKids’ broader strategy of moving toward more individualized pediatric care.

Precision Child Health aims to bring together information about each child’s medical condition, genetics and other relevant health factors to help clinicians better understand individual needs.

Artificial intelligence and advanced analytics could eventually help researchers identify patterns in complex health information, supporting new opportunities for diagnosis, prevention and treatment.

SickKids has already established an enterprise AI program focused on responsible development and implementation of artificial intelligence across clinical care, research and hospital operations.

The new agreement builds on that work while expanding the digital infrastructure needed to support future innovation.

Security and responsible implementation

As healthcare organizations increase their reliance on connected digital systems, protecting patient information and maintaining the reliability of clinical technology remain essential priorities.

SickKids says Microsoft’s cloud security capabilities will support the protection and resilience of critical systems and data.

The organizations also intend to advance responsible AI practices as they evaluate potential applications in healthcare.

The announcement does not specify a total financial value for the agreement or provide a timeline for deploying individual AI applications in clinical practice.

Leaders from Microsoft Canada visited SickKids on October 15 to mark the partnership and learn more about the hospital’s work.

For Canadian hospitals, the agreement represents another example of how healthcare institutions are investing in digital infrastructure as a foundation for future advances in clinical care, research and operational efficiency.
