  • The Secure Healthcare Quality Alliance has launched as a 501(c)(6) trade association focused on correctional healthcare quality, accountability and workforce stability.
  • SHQA said it will promote evidence- and data-informed standards, share best practices and provide a unified voice for organizations serving correctional facilities.
  • The alliance’s stated priorities include advancing quality care, strengthening accountability, supporting the workforce and preserving continuity of care.
  • SHQA said it will work with policymakers, providers and correctional agencies while collaborating with organizations that meet benchmarks for clinical quality, workforce engagement and ethical governance.

WASHINGTON Correctional healthcare leaders have launched the Secure Healthcare Quality Alliance, a new coalition focused on quality care, ethical leadership, operational accountability and workforce stability in correctional settings.

In a statement, the organization said it was formed to address growing industry challenges affecting correctional healthcare providers, government partners and medically complex patient populations. SHQA said it will promote evidence- and data-informed standards, share best practices and advocate for reliable, community-standard care in correctional facilities nationwide.

SHQA’s launch comes as correctional healthcare systems face operational complexity, workforce shortages, regulatory scrutiny and growing demands for accountability.

“Correctional healthcare providers play a critical role in safeguarding the health and well-being of some of the nation’s most vulnerable populations. SHQA was created to support organizations that are committed to quality, transparency, workforce investment, and responsible stewardship of public healthcare resources,” said Deana Johnson, President of SHQA, in a statement.

The alliance said recent industry disruptions have underscored the importance of maintaining stable healthcare operations, protecting frontline caregivers and ensuring uninterrupted patient care regardless of organizational or financial challenges.

SHQA identified four core priorities for its work. The organization said it will advance quality care by promoting proven medical practices aimed at improving patient outcomes. It also plans to strengthen accountability by encouraging ethical leadership, operational transparency and responsible business practices across the sector.

The coalition’s workforce priority centers on supporting frontline nurses, doctors and mental health professionals who provide essential care in correctional facilities. SHQA also said it will focus on preserving continuity of care so patient services remain uninterrupted during organizational transitions or provider changes.

As it moves from launch to implementation, SHQA said it will unite policymakers, providers and correctional agencies to address systemic challenges.

“To truly elevate correctional healthcare, we must build a unified infrastructure that supports providers of all sizes in meeting or exceeding existing national standards,” said Brad McLane, CEO of NaphCare, in a statement.

The alliance said it will collaborate with organizations that meet common benchmarks for clinical quality, workforce engagement and ethical governance.

“Accountability and clinical excellence aren’t just goals for the largest systems; they are daily imperatives for regional and local providers managing the day to day realities of county facilities,” said Jennifer Hairsine, CEO of Southern Health Partners, according to a statement.

SHQA said it will continue developing resources, standards and advocacy initiatives designed to strengthen the correctional healthcare profession and support the public agencies that rely on it.
