Alberta launches physician-led triage program to strengthen emergency departments

New initiative aims to improve patient assessment, reduce treatment delays and ease pressure on hospital emergency departments.

Alberta is moving forward with a Triage Liaison Physician program designed to improve patient flow and strengthen care in hospital emergency departments.

The initiative introduces physicians who work alongside triage nurses to assess patients earlier in their emergency department visits, particularly those waiting to receive treatment.

The approach is intended to identify patients whose conditions may be deteriorating, initiate diagnostic testing sooner and help reduce delays in medical assessment.

The provincial government confirmed the program’s launch in an October 16 statement from Minister of Hospital and Surgical Health Services Adriana LaGrange.

The initiative follows growing concerns about emergency department overcrowding, lengthy wait times and pressure on frontline healthcare professionals.

Under the model, triage liaison physicians can begin medical assessments while patients remain in waiting areas. This may include ordering blood tests, electrocardiograms and diagnostic imaging before patients are transferred to treatment spaces.

By beginning these processes earlier, hospitals hope to improve patient flow and reduce the time required to reach clinical decisions.

The program was originally announced in January 2026 as part of Alberta’s response to mounting pressures in emergency departments.

However, implementation encountered delays as the provincial government and Alberta Medical Association worked through questions involving physician compensation, working conditions and operational responsibilities.

The October announcement marks a further step in implementing the approach.

While physician-led triage has the potential to improve emergency department efficiency, healthcare professionals have emphasized that adequate staffing, treatment spaces and inpatient capacity remain essential to addressing overcrowding.

The initiative will provide an opportunity to assess whether earlier physician involvement can improve patient safety, reduce delays and support emergency department operations.
