Atrium Health Commits More Than $700 Million to New Atlanta Teaching Hospital and Care Network

ATLANTA — Atrium Health and Morehouse School of Medicine are moving forward with plans for a new teaching hospital and regional healthcare network in Atlanta following approval of the proposed development. 

Atrium Health, part of Advocate Health, plans to invest more than $700 million in capital and clinical resources in the hospital and associated care network. The new acute-care facility will be located at 675 Metropolitan Parkway SW and is intended to expand access to hospital, emergency, primary and specialty care across Central and South Fulton County. 

The project comes four years after the 2022 closures of Atlanta Medical Center and Atlanta Medical Center South, which reduced access to nearby hospital and emergency services for communities in South and West Atlanta. 

The hospital is planned to initially open with approximately 50 beds but will be designed with the capacity to expand to more than 700 beds as demand grows. Planned services include a 24/7 emergency department and Level III trauma center, obstetrics, a neonatal intensive care unit, adult critical care, advanced imaging, cardiac catheterization, interventional radiology and endoscopy.

“There are moments in healthcare when you have the opportunity to do more than build a hospital — you have the opportunity to change what is possible for a community for generations,” said Eugene A. Woods, CEO of Advocate Health. 

Extending Care Beyond the Hospital 

The acute-care hospital will serve as the anchor of a broader network designed to connect patients with primary care, specialists, diagnostics, urgent care and academic medicine. 

Plans include primary care practices, combined primary and urgent care locations, specialty services and virtual and community-based care. A healthplex is also planned with services including imaging, infusion, endoscopy and emergency care. Atrium Health and Morehouse School of Medicine additionally plan to expand virtual programs such as Hospital at Home. 

The ambulatory network is being planned around areas identified as having some of Fulton County’s greatest healthcare access needs. A 3D Health analysis cited by Atrium Health identified a shortage of nearly 246 primary care providers in the county. 

The City of Atlanta is expected to contribute more than $115 million toward site preparation, roadway and pedestrian improvements and equipment associated with opening the acute-care campus. Some elements of the broader plan remain contingent on agreements with Fulton County regarding support for Morehouse Medicine’s ambulatory network. 

Healthcare and Economic Investment 

Beyond expanding healthcare capacity, the development is expected to have a significant construction and employment impact. 

An analysis by HR&A Advisors estimates the project could support approximately 5,400 construction jobs and 4,800 permanent direct, indirect and induced positions at full buildout. That figure includes approximately 1,000 health system employees and 150 care providers. The campus and care network could generate an estimated $1.25 billion in annual economic impact once fully operational. 

Morehouse School of Medicine and Atrium Health said they will continue working with residents, healthcare providers, community organizations and government partners as planning and development advance.
