New Weyburn General Hospital prepares to welcome patients November 1

The $134-million-plus Saskatchewan hospital project brings acute care, mental health services and emergency treatment together under one roof.

The new Weyburn General Hospital in southeastern Saskatchewan is preparing to welcome its first patients on November 1, following an official grand opening ceremony held October 23.

The modern healthcare facility will provide expanded services for residents of Weyburn and surrounding communities, with 25 private acute care rooms and 10 inpatient mental health beds. Each acute care room includes a ceiling lift and an accessible washroom designed to improve patient comfort and safety.

Expanded emergency and surgical services

The hospital features a larger emergency department with dedicated trauma care spaces, an advanced operating theatre, upgraded laboratory and medical imaging facilities, and expanded ambulatory and allied health services.

An onsite Emergency Medical Services base and heliport will also support emergency response and transfers of critically ill or injured patients requiring specialized treatment.

By bringing services together in one location, the Saskatchewan Health Authority aims to improve coordination among healthcare professionals while reducing the need for patients to travel between facilities.

Major investment in regional healthcare

The Government of Saskatchewan committed more than $134 million toward the hospital project, with additional funding for equipment, furnishings and capital costs provided through community donations and the Weyburn and District Hospital Foundation.

The new facility was designed to support the region’s healthcare needs while providing modern working environments for physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals.

The hospital’s opening represents an important investment in rural and regional healthcare infrastructure, where access to specialized services and emergency treatment remains a priority.

With the official ceremony complete, healthcare teams are preparing for the transition to the new building ahead of its November 1 opening to patients.
