Advancing Aquaculture Through Early Nutrition: One Technology for Each Stage

A strong start makes a difference. Discover how ADM combines science-based nutrition and innovation to support fish and shrimp during critical early life stages.
ADM states that, in the earliest life stages, every feed particle should deliver its full nutritional value exactly when and where it is needed. To do so, the company applies a different technology at each stage of production, as it explains in the video.
1. In the hatchery, the challenge is size
Early life stages demand the most effective nutrition, and larvae and juveniles measure only microns or millimeters. For this phase, ADM uses proprietary micro-encapsulation technology that concentrates complete nutrition in tiny particles designed for the smallest mouths. The company calls this approach “The Science of Small.”
2. In the nursery, the challenge is protecting nutrients during processing
In the next stage, ADM combines two processes: cold micro-extrusion and marumerization. According to the company, working at low temperature protects the protein and vitamins in the feed.
3. In the culture system, the challenge is water
The third point concerns how the feed behaves once it enters the water. According to ADM, the process preserves feed integrity and prevents leaching, which helps protect water quality.
What it means for operations
The goal the company sets out is for feed to reach the animal at the right size and with its nutrients intact, supporting performance and survival in the hatchery and the nursery. We recommend watching the full video with sound.
