Happy National Reptile Awareness Day to all fellow reptile lovers!

National Reptile Awareness Day, celebrated every year on October 21, is not only a day to appreciate all different types of scaly creatures, but also an opportunity to promote education, responsible reptile keeping, and conservation efforts that help protect reptiles and their natural habitats. Reptiles play important roles in ecosystems around the world, in fact, you can find reptiles on every continent on Earth besides Antarctica (we love our cold-blooded friends). From snakes controlling prey populations to turtles contributing to nutrient cycling and seed dispersal, these animals play an important part in maintaining biodiversity [1].

Unfortunately, many reptiles are facing serious threats in the wild, including habitat destruction from agriculture, logging, urban development, and invasive species [2]. According to a comprehensive global assessment published in 2022, about 21% of reptile species worldwide are threatened with extinction [2]. While these challenges can feel larger than us, education and awareness are so important and can help make a difference. Whether you are a lifelong reptile lover or just starting to learn about these amazing animals, there are plenty of ways to get involved!

5 Ways to Celebrate National Reptile Awareness Day

  1.  Visit a Zoo, Sanctuary, or Conservation Center One of the best ways to learn more about reptiles (or any nature) is to see them up close! Consider visiting an accredited zoo, reputable reptile sanctuary, or a conservation center to discover a species you may not have known existed or haven't encountered before. Many facilities offer educational exhibits, keeper talks, and other opportunities to learn about reptile behavior, habitats, and conservation efforts. Look for organizations that are prioritizing animal welfare, education, and responsible conservation practices.

  2. Watch a Reptile Documentary Maybe you want to celebrate at home this year at the comfort of your couch and maybe even with your own reptile. Watching a documentary about reptiles can offer a fascinating look into their lives in the wild. Especially the behaviors, adaptations, and environments of reptiles around the world. From navigating harsh desert climates to tropical rainforests, it's really amazing to see how reptiles have adapted and developed ways to survive.

  3. Learn Something New About Reptiles

No matter how much experience you have with reptiles, there is always something new to learn! Take some time to explore educational resources at your local library, scientific research, or reptile care guides/books. For reptile keepers, continuing to learn about species-specific care is an important part of providing the best possible quality of life for the animals we love and care for.

Education doesn't stop with the reptiles we keep as pets. Learning about how they move in the wild can help us better understand their natural behaviors, environmental needs, and any challenges they may face.

  4. Support Reptile Conservation Organization Efforts

Reptile conservation is an important part of protecting biodiversity, and there are so many wonderful organizations working to preserve reptile species and their natural habitats. Supporting a reputable conservation organization through donations, volunteering, or simply learning more about its work can help these organizations to contribute to improving the future of reptiles in the wild. Even smaller actions like reducing trash output, cleaning up litter, respecting local wildlife, and helping protect natural spaces can make a difference.

  5. Spread the Awareness!

One of the simplest ways to celebrate National Reptile Awareness Day is to share what you've learned with others! Reptiles are so often misunderstood, and misconceptions around animals like snakes, lizards, and turtles can contribute to unnecessary fear and a negative attitude towards them. Research has found that education and positive experiences with snakes are associated with more favorable perceptions and attitudes toward their conservation [3]. Sharing educational resources, interesting facts, or your own experience with reptiles can help others better understand and appreciate them. Whether it's a lunch date conversation with a friend, an educational social post, or introducing someone to a reptile species they’ve never seen, a little awareness can go a long way!

Celebrating Reptiles Beyond Today

National Reptile Awareness Day only comes around once a year, but we think reptiles deserve a little extra love every day not just on October 21! At Pangea, reptiles are what got us into all of this in the first place. We're still learning new things all the time and the more we all know, the better we can take care of the animals we share our homes with.

Celebrating doesn't have to be anything major. Supporting a conservation group, reading up on your gecko’s natural habitat, or just showing a skeptical friend that snakes are can actually be really chill. All these little things can add up to make a big difference!
