AI-powered imaging advances stroke care at Lakeridge Health

New CT perfusion technology is helping physicians assess brain blood flow and make faster, more informed treatment decisions for stroke patients.

Lakeridge Health has introduced new advanced brain-imaging technology designed to help physicians quickly determine the most appropriate treatment for patients experiencing a stroke.

During an ischemic stroke, a blood clot can prevent blood and oxygen from reaching part of the brain. Rapid assessment is critical because brain tissue can become damaged as the interruption continues.

CT perfusion provides physicians with detailed information about how blood is moving through a patient’s brain. RapidAI then uses artificial intelligence to analyze the imaging, helping clinical teams identify areas that may already have been damaged as well as brain tissue that could potentially be saved through treatment.

The additional information can help physicians make timely decisions about the treatment most appropriate for an individual patient.

The technology is intended to support—not replace—the expertise of physicians and clinical teams. Lakeridge Health says the imaging provides clinicians with more detailed information to help them understand individual patient needs and make informed treatment decisions.

The introduction is also part of a broader investment in technology across the health system.

Earlier this year, Lakeridge Health introduced the Stryker 4.0 Orthopedic Robotics Platform at Ajax Pickering Hospital. The robotic system assists surgical teams in planning and performing joint replacement procedures with greater precision.

Both initiatives support Lakeridge Health’s 2026–2031 strategic plan, which identifies innovation and technology as a priority for improving patient care.

Lakeridge Health is one of Ontario’s largest community health systems, operating five hospitals along with a same-day surgical centre, long-term care home and more than 30 community locations across Durham Region and surrounding communities.
