AI visibility and the importance of trust in dentistry in 2026

Sumit Kumar explains how AI is changing the way patients discover dental practices – and why visibility and trust matter more than ever.

Dentistry practices across the UK have been at the forefront of the artificial intelligence revolution in recent years – and it’s not about to end anytime soon.

The ever-changing technology has had a profound impact on diagnostics, treatments, appointments and scheduling. It has also changed the patient experience before they have even set foot through the door.

AI platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity are playing an increasingly integral role in dental marketing and how customers find and interact with your clinic.

Practice managers can no longer afford not to understand how they show up in AI searches. To stand still in 2026 is to be left behind.

The patient journey transformation

For years, the path from discovery to patient appointment was simple. Word-of-mouth recommendation or location-based online searches were the norm.

Now, with the rise of what many are branding ‘Google killers’ such as ChatGPT and AI overviews, the way consumers find information and make decisions has fundamentally changed.

AI summaries pull together information such as reviews, listings and services to decide your authority and trustworthiness.

While traditional search engines remain highly transactional, a new layer of consumer trust has emerged. If a clinic is missing from AI overviews, it less likely to win the conversion.

Conversely, being visible in ChatGPT builds the trust that facilitates and secures that ultimate Google click and conversion. To win in 2026, clinics must pivot their strategies to ensure they are discovered where the modern consumer is looking.

That means being crystal clear on information such as services, directory listings and clinic opening hours and fostering positive reviews with dental SEO keywords that are likely to convert.

Trust is more important than ever

One of the negative sides of the AI revolution is the increasing lack of trust that can be placed in  online content.

It has never been easier or quicker to produce captivating social media videos, images, blog posts and even entire websites. Anyone can appear to be an expert, regardless of their dental credentials.

However, trust remains a key part of patient decision-making. A dentist’s reputation can take years to build but can be knocked in minutes by a bad online review, disjointed online presence or inaccurate AI summaries.

Until recently, trust in dentistry was transferred by word of mouth or by building a reputation over years in one town.

It now happens when AI collates reviews, directory listings and third-party mentions.

Earned media, which is brand exposure gained through independent sources such as newspapers, magazines or bloggers, has long been a key pillar of communication strategies.

It is an important way to demonstrate trustworthiness and expertise and plays a key role in citations from AI-generated responses.

And while social media and large language models have changed how many of us consume online content, traditional media still has its part to play.

In the age of artificial intelligence, the brands that win won’t be the loudest or the fastest, but they’ll be the most trusted. Technology can amplify your message, but only authenticity earns belief.

Sumit Kumar will be speaking about artificial intelligence, visibility and the importance of trust in dentistry at Dentistry Show London at Excel London on October 9 and 10. To discover more, click here.
