OBIO marks $704m funding milestone for Canadian health tech ventures
The initiative is supported by the Government of Canada through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario.
It is designed to help post-seed health science enterprises secure venture investment, form corporate partnerships, and commercialise technologies.
Alongside reaching the financial milestone, OBIO confirmed the six enterprises selected for its 2026 intake.
The new cohort includes Toronto-based AI. Vali, which specialises in AI-guided diagnostic imaging analysis, and Hamilton-based Block Biosciences that is developing therapies to prevent cancer spreading to the brain.
Ottawa-based Hylid Diagnostics also joins the group with its optical sensor technology for at-home blood testing in kidney disease and heart failure patients.
The remaining participants are all based in Toronto: Orb Therapeutics, a ribonucleic acid (RNA) therapy developer; Synakis, a pre-clinical start-up targeting ocular diseases such as glaucoma; and Thornhill Medical, creator of the RespirAct brain stress test system.
All six companies will receive strategic commercial planning and introductions to potential investors and industry partners.
They will also present at the OBIO Investment Summit in Toronto from 2 to 4 February 2027, an event where presenting enterprises have raised more than C$3.1bn since 2018.
OBIO president and CEO Dr Maura Campbell said: “Reaching this C$1bn milestone is a testament to the world-class innovation emerging from Canada’s health science sector and to the effectiveness of OBIO’s targeted approach.
“Through CAAP, we not only equip founders with intensive coaching, but also provide actionable commercial strategies and direct access to global capital networks via our annual OBIO Investment Summit.
“Every dollar raised by our programme alumni contributes to the creation of new jobs, concrete clinical advancements, and the scaling of Canadian health technologies on the global stage.”
Till date, 127 health science businesses have graduated from the advisory scheme, with 65% securing capital or strategic partnerships within 18 months of completing the programme.
Established in 2009, OBIO is a not-for-profit, membership-led entity providing strategy, programming, and commercialisation support for diagnostics, medical technology, therapeutics, and digital health businesses across Canada.
