SickKids named world’s best children’s hospital for second consecutive year
Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) has been named the world’s best children’s hospital for the second year in a row, placing first among more than 250 paediatric hospitals worldwide in the latest global ranking by Newsweek and Statista.
The back-to-back No. 1 ranking is a first for SickKids and marks the sixth consecutive year the Toronto hospital has ranked among the world’s top two paediatric hospitals. It is also the third time SickKids has earned the No. 1 position. SickKids
The recognition highlights SickKids’ international reputation for highly specialized paediatric care, research and education. Founded in 1875 as Canada’s first children’s hospital, SickKids is affiliated with the University of Toronto and has become one of Canada’s most research-intensive hospitals, with discoveries and clinical advances that have influenced the treatment of children around the world.
The global hospital rankings are developed by Newsweek in partnership with research and data firm Statista. The methodology relies heavily on recommendations from thousands of medical professionals internationally and also considers hospital accreditations, certifications and the implementation of patient-reported outcome measures. The broader specialized-hospital assessment evaluates thousands of hospitals worldwide across major areas of medicine. Statista Rankings
SickKids says the recognition reflects the combined contributions of its physicians, nurses, researchers, trainees, volunteers, donors and wider community.
The hospital is also continuing to advance its Precision Child Health strategy, which aims to move beyond a one-size-fits-all model of care. The approach considers the individual characteristics and circumstances of each child — ranging from genetics to environmental and social factors — to improve diagnosis, treatment and prediction of health outcomes. Data, technology and the responsible use of artificial intelligence are increasingly part of that work. SickKids
The latest recognition is particularly significant for Canadian health care. A Canadian institution occupying the top position in a global field of leading paediatric hospitals demonstrates the expertise and innovation taking place within the country’s child-health system.
For SickKids, the achievement builds on more than 150 years of paediatric care while reinforcing its stated vision: Healthier Children. A Better World.
