Center for Aquaculture Technologies Welcomes Thomas Delomas as New Quantitative Geneticist

Expanding our breeding expertise to support growing demand across North America

At Center for Aquaculture Technologies (CAT), we’re seeing more aquaculture producers turn to genetics and genomics to improve the performance, resilience, and profitability of their breeding programs. As demand for genetic services grows across the US and Canada, we’re expanding our team.

We’re pleased to welcome Dr. Thomas Delomas as our new Quantitative Geneticist.

Tom brings more than a decade of experience in aquaculture genetics, working across a wide range of finfish and shellfish species. His experience spans selective breeding, genetic diversity management, hormonal sex reversal, induced polyploidy, statistical and bioinformatic innovation, and the development and application of genomic tools.

His time working as a geneticist for the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission and the USDA Agricultural Research Service has given Tom the opportunity to develop new genomic tools, integrate technological advancements into breeding programs, and see firsthand the benefits that genomics can deliver.

“My interest in aquaculture started for a simple reason – I like to eat fish!” says Tom. “That has led to over a decade working in aquaculture genetics across a wide range of finfish and shellfish species.”

Expanding our capacity for clients

Tom joins CAT at a time when more producers are exploring how genotyping, genomic selection, and advanced breeding techniques can help them make faster, more informed decisions.

Tom will work directly with CAT clients to develop and implement breeding strategies, apply genomic technologies, and turn complex genetic data into practical breeding decisions.

“Every aquaculture company and every species is unique,” says Tom. “I’m most looking forward to working with each client to create a tailored approach for improved performance.”

Welcoming Tom, Genetic Services Lead for the US and Canada, Dr. Samuel May adds, “We’re excited to have Tom joining the team. His deep analytical and strategic experience ranging across species from koi to salmon to oysters strengthens our ability to support diverse clients and provide further hands-on expertise.”

Bringing genetics into practice

Tom was drawn to CAT because of the opportunity to work directly with producers.

“The cost of developing and using genomic tools has fallen dramatically over the past several years, making it the perfect time for the aquaculture industry to implement these techniques. I was drawn to CAT because the team here is perfectly positioned to make this happen for our clients,” shares Tom.

Supporting the next generation of breeding programs

Bringing Tom on board gives CAT greater capacity to work even closer with producers, take on new breeding challenges, and help clients get more value from the genetic data they are already collecting.

“Tom brings a great combination of highly technical knowledge and applied breeding experience. We’re looking forward to seeing the impact he’ll have with our clients,” concludes Sam.

Tom’s arrival is another step in CAT’s continued investment in the people and expertise needed to help aquaculture producers achieve greater genetic gain and build breeding programs for the future.
