Godavari Biorefineries secures Mexican patent for antiviral research

Godavari Biorefineries has secured a patent from the Mexican Patent Office for its invention titled “Use of Compounds for Treating Viral Infections”. The patent follows earlier grants in Japan and China for the same invention, expanding the geographical protection of the compound class.

The patent covers compounds that inhibit Vacuolar ATPase (V-ATPase), a cellular mechanism involved in the infection process of some viruses, and their use in the manufacture of medicaments for treating viral infections. The research focuses on understanding the role of V-ATPase in viral infection and its potential as a target in antiviral research.

Dr Sangeeta Srivastava, Executive Director, Godavari Biorefineries, said, “The research has allowed us to examine how compounds that inhibit V-ATPase activity could be applied in antiviral research. This patent recognises a specific application of these compounds and represents an important outcome of our work in this area.”

Dr Srivastava is one of four inventors named on the patent, alongside Dr Sandip Gavade, Dr Maithili Athavale and Dr Prashant Kharkar.

The patent adds to Godavari Biorefineries’s intellectual property in the antiviral compound class and its life sciences portfolio.
