SMS medical college suspends 6 MBBS students over ragging complaint, probe later flags dispute: Report

Jaipur: Altogether 6 MBBS students of Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Medical College were recently suspended after the Anti-Ragging Committee found them guilty of ragging following complaints from students of the 2024 batch.

As per latest media report by Dainik Bhaskar, the ragging complaint was filed on the National Medical Commission's portal on March 19. Taking action in this regard, the college administration formed a meeting of the Anti-Ragging Committee the very next day and initiated an inquiry.

Based on the preliminary findings, six students, including five from the 2023 batch and one from the 2022 batch, were suspended. However, the complaint was later reportedly found to be false following an internal probe, and the administration linked the allegation to interpersonal disputes among students rather than to any verified incident of ragging.

The suspended students were barred from attending classes until further notice and will remain under strict monitoring by the Anti-Ragging Squad, adds the daily.

However, during the course of the investigation, officials indicated that the matter appeared to be linked more to interpersonal disputes and rivalry among students rather than a clear instance of ragging. The administration noted that such complaints often surface around the time of Freshers’ Day announcements, as per a Dainik Bhaskar media report.

To strengthen vigilance, the administration has announced several measures, including the installation of CCTV cameras in areas lacking surveillance and regular monitoring across the academic block, hostels, library, canteen, laboratories, and hospital premises. The college administration confirmed that strict action will be taken if any misconduct is confirmed.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that a first-year MBBS student had filed a formal complaint against his seniors, accusing them of physically and mentally harassing him and his batchmates. After receiving the complaint, the college administration took strict action and informed the anti-ragging committee. Following an investigation, 16 second-year students and one intern were found guilty of ragging and have been suspended accordingly. They were barred from attending classes until further notice.
