$2-million investment accelerates psychedelic medicine research at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton

St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton is expanding research into the potential medical use of psychedelics following two $1-million philanthropic investments in its new Centre for Health Innovation and Research in Psychedelics (CHIRP).

The $2 million in combined funding comes from Hamilton philanthropist Teresa Cascioli and The Juravinski Foundation and represents the first major philanthropic investments in the centre, which was launched last fall.

CHIRP is examining whether carefully controlled, medical-grade psychedelic compounds could eventually provide new treatment options for patients living with conditions that can be difficult to treat using existing therapies.

Research areas include chronic pain, addiction, treatment-resistant depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and neurodegenerative disease. Researchers are also investigating potential applications in women’s mental health and supportive care for people facing serious or terminal illnesses.

The centre is led by Dr. Anthony Adili, St. Joseph’s chief innovation officer and CHIRP’s founding director.

Importantly, the work is taking place in a clinical research environment rather than promoting recreational psychedelic use. Psychedelic compounds remain tightly regulated in Canada, and experimental treatments are being investigated through controlled research and regulatory pathways.

One of CHIRP’s research programs is examining psilocybin — the psychoactive compound found in some mushrooms — as a potential treatment for chronic pain.

The centre is also collaborating with the Michael G. DeGroote Centre for Medicinal Cannabis Research at McMaster University on research examining psilocybin-assisted therapy for cannabis use disorder.

St. Joseph’s is additionally participating in a national research initiative examining psychedelic-assisted therapies. According to the hospital, the centre’s work includes clinical trials authorized through appropriate Health Canada pathways.

The new funding will help CHIRP build research infrastructure, recruit specialized personnel and support clinical trials.

Interest in psychedelic medicine has increased considerably in recent years as researchers revisit substances that were largely excluded from mainstream medical research for decades.

Early studies have suggested potential therapeutic applications for certain psychedelic compounds, particularly for some mental health conditions, but significant questions remain about effectiveness, patient selection, dosing, safety and how treatments should be delivered.

That makes hospital-based research particularly important. Clinical trials can evaluate potential benefits while monitoring adverse effects and determining whether promising results can be reproduced in larger and more diverse patient populations.

For Canadian hospitals, the research also raises broader questions about how psychedelic-assisted treatments might eventually fit into existing mental health, pain, addiction and palliative-care programs if future clinical evidence supports their use.

CHIRP is part of the Research Institute of St. Joseph’s Health System. St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton has longstanding clinical and research programs in mental health and addictions, making the hospital a significant Canadian centre for investigating emerging approaches to treatment.

The $2-million investment will allow researchers to move several areas of psychedelic research forward while building the clinical evidence needed to determine where — and whether — these therapies ultimately have a role in routine patient care.
