$210M Burnaby Hospital Expansion to Add Emergency and Surgical Capacity

Burnaby Hospital is moving ahead with a $210-million expansion and upgrade of its emergency and surgical departments as British Columbia renews plans for the hospital’s redevelopment.

The provincial investment will support immediate improvements to emergency and surgical services, while planning continues for expanded cancer care and additional acute-care capacity.

The project builds on the first phase of the Burnaby Hospital redevelopment, which opened earlier this year. That phase included a new six-storey health-care pavilion with 83 beds, new maternity and neonatal intensive care services, mental-health and medical units, six operating rooms and expanded emergency department space. Expanded emergency department

The next stage will add 16 emergency department treatment spaces, along with a combined waiting and patient check-in area, a new decontamination zone and ambulance entrance.

The expansion will also include upgraded mechanical, electrical and information technology systems and separate pathways for patients and staff.

Major surgical expansion

Burnaby Hospital’s surgical department will also undergo significant expansion and modernization.

Four operating rooms will be upgraded and combined with the six operating rooms that opened earlier this year, providing the hospital with 10 standardized operating rooms.

Plans also include an integrated sterile core serving the operating rooms, four minor procedure rooms and 42 renovated perioperative preparation and recovery bays — 17 more than currently available.

More hospital capacity planned

The province says the $210-million investment is part of a renewed approach to the larger Burnaby Hospital redevelopment.

The project’s timeline was adjusted in the 2026 provincial budget after updated estimates showed the redevelopment was significantly over budget. An independent review subsequently produced 25 recommendations aimed at controlling costs and determining how the project could proceed.

Further phases are expected to include expanded cancer services and increased patient-care capacity through a new acute-care tower.

Work on the emergency and surgical improvements is beginning immediately, with initial procurement expected to be completed in early 2027, followed by detailed design and construction. Fraser Health
