Alberta hospital expansion to add more than 3,000 surgeries annually
Alberta is investing $12.5 million to expand surgical services at Fort Saskatchewan Community Hospital, with renovations expected to increase the facility’s surgical capacity by nearly 50 per cent.
The expansion, announced October 8, is projected to support more than 3,000 additional procedures annually once the upgraded facilities are fully operational.
Construction is expected to begin in the coming weeks, with completion anticipated by 2029. The hospital will continue providing surgical and other healthcare services throughout the renovation period, with construction scheduled in phases to minimize disruptions.
Expanding surgical capacity
The project will modernize several areas of the hospital to accommodate growing demand for surgical services in Fort Saskatchewan and surrounding communities northeast of Edmonton.
Planned improvements include expanded day surgery facilities, relocation of outpatient and intravenous therapy services, and upgrades to the hospital’s Medical Device Reprocessing Area.
Medical device reprocessing is an essential component of surgical operations, ensuring reusable instruments and equipment are properly cleaned, disinfected and sterilized before use.
The hospital currently provides ophthalmology, gynecology, general surgery and endoscopy procedures.
The expansion is intended to increase the number of patients who can receive surgical care closer to home while reducing pressure on other healthcare facilities in the region.
Part of a broader surgical investment
The Fort Saskatchewan project is being funded through the Alberta Surgical Initiative, a three-year, $284-million program focused on upgrading operating rooms, modernizing surgical infrastructure and purchasing equipment at hospitals across the province.
The initiative is intended to improve surgical access and make better use of existing hospital resources.
According to the provincial government, Alberta completed 332,847 surgeries during the previous fiscal year, exceeding its annual target and establishing a new provincial record.
The province has also committed $525 million toward delivering 50,000 additional publicly funded surgeries over three years.
Meeting growing healthcare demand
Fort Saskatchewan and neighbouring communities have experienced population growth, increasing demand for healthcare services.
By expanding surgical facilities within the existing hospital, the province aims to accommodate more procedures locally while supporting the healthcare needs of the growing region.
The project also illustrates the importance of investing in supporting hospital infrastructure, including instrument reprocessing and outpatient services, alongside operating room capacity.
Once complete, the upgrades are expected to provide additional surgical capacity and improve access to treatment for patients throughout the region. Alberta.ca
