Texas Aquaculture Association Endorses Dr. Dawn Buckingham for Texas Land Commissioner

By: Aquaculture Stewardship Council

The Texas Aquaculture Association (TAA) has officially endorsed Dr. Dawn Buckingham for reelection as Texas Land Commissioner, citing her responsiveness to the needs of Texas aquaculture producers and her interest in working with the industry to strengthen opportunities for aquaculture in Texas.

The endorsement follows a meeting earlier this week between Commissioner Buckingham and members of the Texas Aquaculture Association. The TAA Board of Directors expressed appreciation for the Commissioner’s past responsiveness and her willingness to partner with the industry to improve the business environment for aquaculture in the future.

“Texas aquaculture is growing, and our industry needs strong working relationships with state leaders who understand the opportunities and challenges facing aquaculture producers,” said

Brian Brawner, President of the Texas Aquaculture Association. “Commissioner Buckingham has demonstrated a willingness to listen to our industry and work with us on issues that directly affect our farms and our ability to grow. We appreciate that partnership and look forward to continuing to work together.”

Texas aquaculture farmers contribute to food production, rural economic development, water stewardship and efforts to reduce reliance on imported seafood. TAA supports Buckingham’s interest in reducing and streamlining regulations while maintaining responsible resource management which aligns with priorities identified by the aquaculture community.

“Texas aquaculture plays an increasingly important role in feeding Texans and the nation,” TAA Executive Director, Kay Johnson Smith said. “We appreciate Commissioner Buckingham’s open communication and her willingness to work with our producers to enhance their ability to expand business, thereby creating new economic opportunities in Texas. Our producers are eager to work alongside the Commissioner and the General Land Office to identify solutions, encourage investment and help grow a stronger, more competitive aquaculture industry.”
