Understanding Fear Periods in Adolescent Dogs

Your puppy may seem confident and curious one day, then suddenly become unsure of things they’ve never had a problem with before. This sudden change in behavior can be a normal part of growing up and may be what’s known as an adolescent fear period. These temporary periods are very common as dogs mature and don’t necessarily mean they are becoming fearful long term or forgetting their training.

Understanding what’s happening can help you respond appropriately and give your pup the support they need to work through this temporary change with confidence. In this post, we cover:

What Is a Fear Period?

Fear periods are temporary developmental stages where young pups become more sensitive to familiar and unfamiliar things around them, which may cause them to suddenly act scared or reactive toward objects, sounds, or people they had been comfortable with in the past.

Fear periods can happen throughout puppyhood and adolescence and typically last about two to three weeks but can vary from dog to dog. Fear periods are typically unpredictable, so they can take many dog owners by surprise and can be mistaken for sudden bad behavior or a loss of training when it is actually a temporary insecurity.

Signs Your Adolescent Dog May Be Experiencing a Fear Period

Fear periods can seem to appear suddenly, sometimes even overnight. During this stage, adolescent pups become fearful, uncertain, or unexpectedly startled by everyday objects, noises, or friendly people.

You may notice your dog suddenly avoiding things they previously enjoyed, hesitating to approach people or other pups, startling more easily, or becoming more reluctant to enter new environments. They may also hide, back away, freeze, bark, growl, or look for extra reassurance from their pet parent.

Fear can also show through body language, like a tucked tail, lowered body posture, ears pinned back, or showing the whites of their eyes.

How To Support Your Dog During a Fear Period

The best thing you can do if your dog experiences a fear period is to stay calm and patient. Pups can be sensitive to your reactions, so try to avoid showing frustration or punishing your dog when they’re nervous. Instead, give them plenty of time and space to process what is happening, and don’t force them to approach whatever may be making them uncomfortable. Let them move away if they need to, and then introduce new or unfamiliar experiences gradually and at their own pace.

Positive reinforcement during a fear period can help your pup build confidence. Reward calm behavior with treats, praise, or a favorite toy, and try to create a positive association with the situation. Dogs often benefit from consistent routines during periods of fear, as they can help build a sense of security, so aim to keep mealtimes, walks, playtime, and enrichment part of their routine where possible, and allow extra downtime when needed.

Helping Your Adolescent Dog Grow with Confidence

A maturing puppy can come with plenty of ups and downs as they grow and develop, and a sudden new fear doesn’t mean that they are permanently changed or have forgotten their training. Fear periods are often temporary, but how you support your pup during this stage can help them feel more secure and confident as they work through new or unfamiliar experiences.

One way to build this confidence is to give your dog plenty of activities they enjoy and feel successful doing, such as training sessions, puzzle toys, and other enrichment activities. Focus on creating safe, predictable, and positive experiences rather than expecting your dog to feel confident in every situation. With patience and support, you can help them navigate this stage and continue building confidence.
