True Family
Our four cats, Ellis, Aurora, Millicent, and Josie, are more than pets; they are our children. As a couple having difficulty conceiving human kids, they fill our hearts with a love we never imagined possible. Ellis, the oldest and our matriarch, offers comfort with her quiet presence. Aurora, full of mischief, reminds us to always find joy in the little things. Millicent’s gentle spirit brings peace, while Josie’s playful antics keep our days light. Each one has carved a special place in our lives, teaching us the true meaning of family, love, life, and the beauty of being together.—Anthony Zicari
Attention
A high-stakes stillness always happens when cats decide that you are finally worthy of their attention. In our Riverdale home in the Bronx, Stella, a twelve-year-old Calico, and Chatty, a seven-year-old Bombay, sat on the big, white chair like fur coated co-directors, silently demanding that I hit the shutter—so I did! I adopted Stella ten years ago and Chatty last year from a shelter. They talk to me and love me in their own individual ways, making my life so much fuller. We are family.—Peggy Tartt
The Sad One
Toshi was surrendered to the shelter because one of his small humans was deathly allergic to cats. He was sad and overlooked. We had lost a cat and needed a new friend for our household—we saw him, fell in love, and once they told us his sad story, there was no way we were going to let him linger at the shelter. We brought him home, and he immediately brightened our lives and gave us joy. Don’t overlook the sad cats! We recently helped escort him over the rainbow bridge and miss him every day.—Krista Carboni
Love Like Lunabelle
Lunabelle came into our lives for far too short a time but left a lasting impact. On May 1, 2026, she appeared on our porch, and nearly two months later, she introduced us to her kittens. When we took her to the vet, we learned she had aggressive FIP. We loved her too much to let her suffer. Our plan was to keep Luna and find homes for her babies, but we decided to keep all three kittens, so her memory lives on. Her greatest accomplishment was being an amazing mother. We’re grateful she found us, and her kittens will always be loved.—Evelyn Mullins
Purr-sistance
My cat Crumb chose me before I chose him. One day, a scruffy stray wandered through the automatic doors of the vet clinic where I worked like he belonged there. We neutered him and set him back outside, but he kept coming back in every chance he got. Day after day, he returned, determined to stay. Eventually, it was obvious he wasn’t just visiting; he was looking for a home. So, I adopted him. The stray cat who walked into our clinic walked straight into my heart.—Jennifer Flynn
Tilsa the Human Cat
In 2014, a fragile calico kitten walked straight into our home in Peru, locking eyes with me. Initially, I was hesitant, but her helplessness won my heart. I named her Tilsa and sewed her first blouse. She became a “human cat,” bonding with my special-needs brother, calling my dad accidentally on the phone, and bringing endless joy. Sadly, at 12 years old, Tilsa passed away from a heart attack, resting on the same chair where she was first welcomed. Her ashes now rest on a family altar. We miss our beautiful Tilsa forever.—Sarahì Lòpez
