Screen Time, Aging Eyes, and the Role of Pycnogenol® in Retinal Health

Another clinical study found that after three months of supplementation, retinal edema improved by:

  • 30% in mild cases

  • 35% in moderate cases

These findings suggest that Pycnogenol® may help stabilize leaky capillaries, improve microcirculation, and support endothelial function—key mechanisms in preserving retinal integrity.


Protection of Retinal Capillaries in Retinal Vein Thrombosis

Retinal vein thrombosis (RVT) is the second most common retinal vascular disease after diabetic retinopathy. Major risk factors include:

Outcomes were significantly better than in patients treated with antiplatelet agents such as aspirin, ticlopidine, or sulodexide.

Pycnogenol® has demonstrated mild but meaningful antithrombotic and antiplatelet activity, along with improved microcirculation in chronic venous insufficiency. These vascular benefits likely contribute to its positive effects in retinal vein thrombosis.


Antioxidant Protection for the Retina

Oxidative stress and inflammation are central contributors to retinopathies and age-related macular degeneration. Given the retina’s high metabolic demand, antioxidant protection is crucial.

In comparative laboratory studies, Pycnogenol® demonstrated stronger protection against retinal lipid peroxidation than vitamin C, vitamin E, CoQ10, lipoic acid, and grape seed extract.

Key findings include:

  • 61% inhibition of lipid peroxidation at 50 ng/ml

  • 93% inhibition at 250 ng/ml

In combination with lutein, Pycnogenol® showed synergistic protective effects. While lutein alone had limited impact in this model, the combination improved lipid peroxidation reduction from 29% to 47%.
