Vesuvius on Foot:  A Hike to the Crater

Hiking to the Vesuvius crater is the ultimate way to experience this historic volcano.  After visiting Pompeii and Herculaneum ruins, it’s exciting to visit this site.  It completes the story of that catastrophic eruption in 79 AD.  I ventured off solo for a half-day Vesuvius crater hike from Naples.  This was one of my favorite volcano experiences ever.  So, read on and learn about what it’s like to actually experience this iconic volcano up close and personal.

About Vesuvius

Mount Vesuvius is a somma-stratovolcano formed from the collision of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates.  It’s located on the Gulf of Naples, just 9 km (5.6 mi) east of Naples.  Also, it’s part of the Campanian volcanic arc.  Vesuvius consists of a large cone (Gran Cono), partially encircled by a summit caldera rim.  The caldera was caused by the collapse of the earlier Mount Somma.

The Gran Cono was created during the 79 AD eruption that destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum.  Vesuvius is the only volcano on mainland Europe that erupted in the last 100 years.  The last eruption was 1944. It’s considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world as one of the Decade Volcanoes.  This is mainly because Vesuvius is near 3 million people that would be affected by an eruption.  Interestingly, from all this volcanic activity, Vesuvius National Park contains 230 rich minerals.

Transportation and Admissions

The Circumvesuviana Train stops at Pompeii Scavi and Herculaneum from Naples and Sorrento.  Then, a bus shuttle from both locations goes to Vesuvius.  Also, a direct ride from Naples, Busvia del Vesuvio runs daily from the city center.   On the road up the mountain, we drove by wineries.  Mt. Vesuvius slopes provide mineral-rich soil for some reputable wines.

The volcano usually opens from 9am to 4pm, with extended hours in summer.   Entrance fees are around €10-15 per person.  Especially during summer, it’s best to book tickets online for time slots.  The trail may be closed due to weather or volcanic activity.  So, it’s good to check their website before visiting the volcano.

Gran Cono Trail (Trail No. 5) to Summit Crater

The bus dropped us off in the parking lot at the entrance Piazzale di Quota 1000 (1,000 m above sea level) in Ercolano.  I purchased my ticket online starting the hike at around 11 am.  Even though it was July, the higher elevation and breeze kept the temperature comfortable.  The trail gains about 200 m elevation on the 1.7 km (1.1 mi) path to the crater.   I completed the roundtrip trail in about 3 hours, with lots of photo stops and enjoying the views.

The trail is moderately steep with switchbacks on a wide path with lava rocks and gravel. The trail is within the Vesuvius National Park.  The landscapes and views are stunning and vary as you make your way up the mountain.   Wooden railings and benches provide places for resting along the way.

The scenery is fantastic, revealing lush, greenery in the beginning.  Ascending, the terrain changes into more volcanic landscapes etched by lava flows.  The views get even better as you climb, seeing Naples, Bay of Naples, Amalfi Coast, Capri and Pompeii.

Crater Rim Summit

The crater/caldera rim summit stands at 1,281 m (4,203 ft) with the path looping around ¾ of the crater.  On the top is a café and small shop for food, water and souvenirs with a bathroom.

The summit provides fenced viewing platforms to safely look into the crater. I was in awe to experience up close this massive crater from which so much history was made.  The crater’s diameter is elliptical, at about 1,476 ft (450 m) from one .  It’s approximately 2 km (1.2 mi) in circumference and 300 m deep.  Even though it seems so quiet, steam vents (fumaroles) emit vapors from crater floor, reminding of what is beneath.

The walking trail goes around about ¾ of the crater rim.  This offers spectacular views inside the crater.  I noticed the rocks varying colors of gray, brown, reds and sulfur yellow.

Enjoy Vesuvius!

There is nothing like standing right there, seeing the Gran Cona!  After being to Pompeii 3 times and Herculaneum, finally I brought this volcano to real life.  Plus, I was relieved to know the hike is just moderate and can be done in a half-day.  So, no excuses if you are in the area.  Do not miss out on this geological wonder and historic gem.
