Skin Care Spotlight: ISDIN

ISDIN was founded in Barcelona in 1975 as a joint venture between a cosmetics group and a pharmaceutical company – an unusual pairing that still defines how the brand develops products. The term the brand itself uses is “dermocosmetics,” or formulations built with dermatologist input from the start, not added as a sign-off at the end. In Europe, ISDIN has been a staple in dermatology practices for decades. In the US, the ISDINCEUTICS treatment line and mineral sunscreens in particular have been gaining serious traction.

Here, we take a closer look at the history behind ISDIN, what sets it apart from other medical-grade skin care brands, and which skin types it’s best for.

ISDIN was co-founded in 1975 by Puig, a Barcelona-based cosmetics and fragrance group, and Laboratorios Dr. Esteve, a Spanish pharmaceutical company. The partnership gave the brand an unusual dual foundation from the start: one side focused on cosmetic appeal, the other on pharmaceutical rigor. That combination shaped what would become their defining product category, the “dermocosmetic.”

The brand now operates in more than 65 countries and holds the position of Spain's top-selling dermatological brand. In the US, its presence has grown steadily over the past decade, primarily through dermatology practices and medical spas. ISDIN products are formulated with prescription-adjacent ingredients and developed alongside dermatologists, but available without a prescription through professional retail channels.

The founding premise behind ISDIN was that clinical efficacy and cosmetic appeal are not mutually exclusive. Both Puig and Esteve brought distinct expertise, and the collaboration was built on the idea that effective products should also be products people actually enjoy using. 

Rather than anchoring product lines to a single hero ingredient, ISDIN tends to build formulas around multiple mechanisms working in tandem with one another. Their pigment-correcting serum, for instance, targets three separate pathways of melanin regulation rather than relying on a single brightening ingredient. 

• Sun care innovation – ISDIN's SPF products, particularly the Eryfotona line, is recognized in dermatology for pairing UV filters with photolyase enzyme technology designed to address UV-induced DNA damage [3].

• ISDINCEUTICS treatment serums – ISDIN’s professional-grade treatment products, which include retinaldehyde, multi-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid, and multi-pathway brightening formulas have been developed in collaboration with skin scientists.

• Dual-phase delivery – some ISDINCEUTICS products use a two-component bottle that keeps active ingredients physically separated from buffering or soothing components until application, thus preserving potency and reducing the likelihood of irritation.

• Tolerability – even active ingredients with a reputation for sensitivity, such as retinaldehyde, are formulated alongside soothing ingredients like bakuchiol and niacinamide to help support barrier function and minimize adverse effects.

• Retinaldehyde, also called retinal, occurs directly before retinoic acid in the vitamin A conversion pathway, requiring only one enzymatic conversion to become biologically active, compared to two steps for retinol [4]. This means the compound may act faster than retinol and without the irritation profile of prescription tretinoin. ISDIN's Retinal Advanced Serum uses a dual-phase bottle to keep retinaldehyde and a soothing complex in separate chambers until dispensed together. This extends stability, since retinaldehyde is prone to oxidative degradation.

• Melatonin functions primarily as an indirect antioxidant, stimulating the activity of antioxidant enzymes rather than acting as a direct free radical scavenger. Research shows that topical melatonin can provide added protection against UV damage, particularly when applied prior to sun exposure [5]. Its presence in a night formula can also aid in circadian-regulated DNA repair and skin renewal [6].

• The Pigment Expert serum works on hyperpigmentation through several mechanisms. The formula combines tranexamic acid, which interferes with the signaling that drives melanin overproduction, with 4-butylresorcinol, niacinamide, phytic acid, and hydroxy acids. Targeting multiple pigmentation pathways helps to improve conditions like melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, where pigment is driven by more than one mechanism at once.

• Photolyase, found in ISDIN's Eryfotona Actinica sunscreen, is an enzyme derived from microorganisms that aids in the repair of UV-induced DNA damage. ISDIN delivers photolyase in a liposomal carrier (called “repairsomes”) to improve penetration into the deeper layers, where UV damage accumulates most. The technology has over a decade of clinical research behind it, making it one of the more studied photoprotective ingredients available [7].

Controlled studies have shown statistically significant improvements in epidermal thickness, skin elasticity, wrinkle depth, and keratinocyte turnover with retinaldehyde compared to controls at concentrations as low as 0.05% [3]. It also caused less redness and fewer adverse effects than retinoic acid at equivalent concentrations [3]. A double-blind, randomized, split-face study using a multilamellar vesicle-encapsulated retinaldehyde formula confirmed improvements in photoaging markers with good tolerability across skin types [8]. ISDIN’s clinical claims for the Retinal Advanced include a 43% reduction in wrinkles after four weeks. 

A peer-reviewed study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology evaluated the combination of tranexamic acid, niacinamide, 4-butylresorcinol, phytic acid, and hydroxy acids for improved skin pigmentation. The study found measurable reductions in skin pigmentation as early as week two, continuing through week 12, with no relapse at the one-month follow-up and no adverse skin reactions [9]. 

A 10-year review of clinical evidence published in Dermatology and Therapy assessed ISDIN's photolyase-containing Eryfotona Actinica in the management of actinic keratosis. Across multiple studies, twice-daily use produced reductions in AK lesion count, improvement in dermoscopic and histological markers, and clinically visible improvement as early as one to two months [10]. A real-life clinical study confirmed these outcomes on the face and scalp with strong patient adherence and tolerability [11]. 

A systematic review published in Molecules found that topical melatonin demonstrates anti-aging effects through antioxidant, mitochondrial, and extracellular matrix mechanisms, with a strong safety record [6]. Photoprotective effects were most pronounced when melatonin was applied before UV exposure.

The majority of ISDIN's efficacy data for the ISDINCEUTICS treatment line comes from brand-funded studies rather than independent peer-reviewed trials. Sample sizes are typically small. The Eryfotona photolyase evidence is the strongest, supported by more than a decade of published clinical data. 

ISDIN products cover a range of skin concerns and work for many Baumann Skin Types, though certain products suit specific skin types better than others.

The Retinal Advanced Serum is best for people with visible signs of aging who may need a more tolerable retinoid to minimize irritation. Like other retinoid products, this product shouldn’t be used during pregnancy. 

The Pigment Expert is best suited for people managing melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or dark spots. The lightweight gel texture makes it a particularly good fit for oily skin types. 

The Hyaluronic Concentrate is especially well-suited for dry skin. Because it is non-comedogenic and oil-free, it can also be an option for some oily types with dehydration concerns.

The ISDINCEUTICS treatment serums rely on solid ingredient science, but the clinical studies behind them are largely brand-funded. 

As with many other medical-grade skin care brands, price may also be a barrier for some consumers. That said, ISDIN’s ingredient and formulation quality are reflected in its higher prices, which many people find is worth the tradeoff for products that work well for their skin.
