Mahjong Retreats Are the New Wellness Escapes (Yes, Really)

Snapshot

  • Trace mahjong's roots from 1800s China to the American version standardized by the National Mah Jongg League in 1937, with its own rules, joker tiles and an annual card.
  • Tap into the brain benefits: regular mahjong play is linked to improved memory, sharper focus and stronger executive function.
  • Book one of six mahjong retreats at Canyon Ranch, Lake Austin Spa Resort, The Tides Inn, High Hampton, The Greenbrier or Tile Travelers.
  • Factor in the social wellness angle: the U.S. Surgeon General flagged loneliness as a health risk on par with smoking 15 cigarettes a day, and mahjong is a phones-down, face-to-face antidote.
  • Look for programming that ranges from beginner instruction and strategy workshops to tournament play, spa access and resort dining.

Mahjong retreats might just be the wellness hack you didn’t know you needed, complete with tiles, spa rituals, yoga flows and a whole lot of dopamine. Here’s why all the cool kids are flocking to mahjong retreats.

This centuries-old game is taking the United States by storm. Mahjong event listings have nearly tripled in the past two years. Much of the growth is fueled by “younger” players looking for social experiences that don’t involve a screen.

Women in their twenties, thirties, forties and upward are forming leagues, booking cruises and signing up for weekend mahjong retreats at some of the U.S.’s most coveted resorts.

What Is Mahjong, Anyway?

Mahjong was developed in southern China in the mid-1800s and arrived in the U.S. in the early 1920s, where it became a national craze. By 1937, the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) was formed. The organization standardized a distinctly American version with its own rules, joker tiles and an annual card that changes every spring.

Played with 144 tiles, mahjong is a strategy game that blends memory, pattern recognition and probability. Players draw and discard tiles to complete specific combinations while adapting to an ever-changing board. Most mahjong retreats welcome beginners, making the game surprisingly approachable even for first-timers.

So, how did this tile game end up on the wellness radar? Turns out the brain science is pretty compelling.

Why Mahjong Is a Wellness Game

Firstly, mahjong is cognitive multitasking in disguise. Players must remember discarded tiles, calculate odds, adjust strategy on the fly and read their opponent’s behavior.

That kind of mental juggling taps into multiple areas of the brain at once, including working memory and recall, sustained focus, strategic planning and even hand-eye coordination from handling the tiles themselves.

Not surprisingly, research backs this up. Studies find that older adults who regularly play mahjong have improvements in memory and executive function, the mental skills that support everyday tasks like grocery shopping and driving.

Mahjong also activates all five senses (sight, touch, sound, smell, taste), creating a more immersive experience than most brain-training exercises can claim.

But brain health is only one side of the tile. According to the U.S. Surgeon General flagged loneliness as a public health crisis on par with smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Mahjong is a four-player, phones-down, face-to-face game with built-in pauses between hands (for actual conversation). Social wellness before social wellness had a name.

Hotels & Resorts Have Entered the Mahjong Chat

Here are six mahjong retreats to put on your radar if you’re into the whole mahjong-meets-wellness thing.

1. Lake Austin Spa Resort — Austin, Texas

Lake Austin Spa Resort calls its mahjong retreat “Spa-hjong by the Lake,” and it surely lives up to that name. The multi-day format includes guided sessions, strategy workshops, social play and a friendly tournament on the shores of Lake Austin.

Leading the programming is Candyce Welch, a mah jongg instructor who has been teaching at the resort for more than seven years. Between rounds, guests have full access to the resort’s spa and waterfront activities.

2. Canyon Ranch — Lenox, Massachusetts & Tucson, Arizona

Canyon Ranch partners with Gold Coast Mahjong Club for mahjong retreats at both its Lenox and Tucson locations. Between rounds, guests have full access to Canyon Ranch’s all-inclusive wellness programming: fitness classes, spa services, integrative health consultations and chef-crafted meals.

3. The Tides Inn — Irvington, Virginia

The Tides Inn hosts mahjong retreat camps on the Chesapeake Bay led by Dana Lange, who packs more than nine hours of guided play into the weekend, including decision-tree strategy and tournament prep. Beginners get their own track. Welcome receptions and a themed group dinner round out the stay.

4. High Hampton Resort — Cashiers, North Carolina

High Hampton runs a multi-day mahjong weekend led by Mahj in the City, a Charlotte-based organization co-founded by Ashley Sigmon and Leigh Young. Programming covers beginner and advanced classes, evening wine receptions and open play against a Blue Ridge Mountain backdrop.

5. The Greenbrier Resort — White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia

The Greenbrier Resort offers mahjong tournament weekends led by Lookout Mountain Mahjong inside Dorothy Draper’s famously maximalist interiors. Tournament weekends include a welcome cocktail reception, tournament play and swag. Game supplies are provided.

6. Tile Travelers — Multi-Destination

Sisters Carole Tufeld and Patty Dickman run Tile Travelers Mahjong Retreats, a series of luxury weekend getaways that cover hotel, meals and game play. Each retreat features a “Pink Basket” raffle honoring their mother, Roz, who taught them both to play, with proceeds going to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
