FAO adopts global action plan for sustainable livestock transformation

OneHealthFAO Member countries have adopted the Global Plan of Action for Sustainable Livestock Transformation (GPA) during the 30th Session of the Committee on Agriculture (COAG), marking the adoption of the first globally negotiated framework dedicated to the sustainable transformation of the livestock sector.

The Global Plan of Action is a voluntary, non-binding and country-driven framework intended to help governments and stakeholders address the economic, social and environmental dimensions of livestock production. It is structured around four priority areas: food security, nutrition and healthy diets; better livelihoods and inclusive economic growth; animal health through a One Health approach; and the sustainable use of natural resources, climate action and biodiversity.

The framework is intended to support the livestock sector as demand for animal products continues to grow while addressing challenges including zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance, biodiversity loss, greenhouse gas emissions, and soil and water pollution.

Overall, the plan sets out 17 strategic priorities and 85 actions spanning the entire livestock value chain. These include measures to improve feed and feed resource management, strengthen animal disease prevention and control, promote responsible antimicrobial use through good management practices, enhance animal welfare, reduce food loss and waste, improve market access for livestock producers, and support the sustainable management of rangelands and pasturelands.

Many of these actions are directly relevant to poultry production, particularly those related to feed management, food safety, animal health, antimicrobial stewardship and animal welfare.

FAO is encouraging Member countries to develop or adapt national plans of action that reflect their own contexts, needs and priorities. The organisation will support implementation through technical assistance where appropriate, while the FAO Sub-Committee on Livestock will periodically review progress and make recommendations.

The Global Plan of Action was developed following a request from FAO Members at the 2024 Session of the FAO Sub-Committee on Livestock and was prepared in consultation with Member countries over the past two years.
