France lowers HPAI risk level and lifts nationwide poultry housing measures

France has reduced its risk level for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) from moderate to negligible, ending nationwide measures that required poultry to be kept indoors.

The change took effect in early June following a decision by the Ministry of Agriculture. As a result, no national HPAI restrictions remain in force.

Poultry producers are no longer required to keep birds indoors under a nationwide mandate. However, local prefects retain the authority to introduce restrictions where local risk assessments justify additional measures.

France had already lowered its HPAI risk level from high to moderate in late April.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza is a seasonal disease that typically emerges in autumn with migratory birds and recedes in spring.
