Mexico narrows Newcastle restrictions on Brazilian poultry meat to Santa Catarina

Mexico has lifted its nationwide restrictions on Brazilian poultry meat imports, keeping the ban in place only for Santa Catarina, where Newcastle disease outbreaks were reported in October.

Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) announced the decision on 30 October, confirming that Mexico had agreed to recognise regionalisation. Poultry meat exports can therefore resume from other Brazilian states already authorised to supply the Mexican market.

Mexico initially suspended imports from Brazil on 19 October, following a Newcastle disease outbreak at a commercial turkey farm in Santa Catarina. A second outbreak was subsequently confirmed, as reported by Zootecnica on 26 October. The state’s animal health authority, CIDASC, later confirmed a third outbreak on 26 October.

The revised restrictions concern poultry meat. MAPA did not clarify whether Mexico has also changed its import requirements for other poultry products, including hatching eggs and day-old chicks.
