Remembering Dr James “Jim” McKay

It is with deep regret that friends and former colleagues of Dr James “Jim” McKay note his death on 9 September 2026, following recurrent infections after a stroke.

Jim was a formidable scientist who, over nearly five decades, made a substantial and lasting contribution to the development and integrity of the global poultry industry. He worked at the UK Poultry Research Centre near Edinburgh and subsequently at Ross Breeders, Aviagen and the EW Group.

Born in 1952 and brought up in Ayrshire, Jim received a first-class honours degree and a PhD from the University of Edinburgh, followed by academic research in Dublin. Through his calm and disciplined application of the scientific method, Jim regularly addressed significant industry challenges, including avian leukosis virus, highly pathogenic avian influenza and the development of welfare regulations. Livelihoods depended on Jim’s ability to find solutions; he never let the industry down.

Colleagues, customers and competitors alike regarded Jim as completely trustworthy when he led collaborative projects, often in the most difficult circumstances. He was enjoyable to work with and always able to see the lighter side of events. His legacy includes the many scientists he mentored and encouraged through his generous and unassuming leadership.

Jim leaves his wife, Helen, whom he met on their first day at university. Helen built her own distinguished career in forestry research. Jim’s priority was always his family, including his son John and daughter Katie. He was happiest at home, developing and tending the garden that he and Helen created together.

Ian Panton, formerly CEO of Aviagen and a long-time colleague, said: “Jim’s commitment to professional research, combined with his humanity and decency, made him a very special friend who will be missed by many former colleagues. Our thoughts are with his family.”
